And then there were 16. After nearly 4000 VJ wannabes applied, only the hottest and coolest were left standing as MuchMusic announced the remaining candidates for the sickest job in the country. Applicants from across Canada battled it out on YouTube, Facebook, Twitter®, and MySpace™. Fans all over the country connected with applicants at muchmusic.com giving 16 potential VJs the chance to become a Canadian icon. The Top 16 represent 13 cities from British Columbia, Alberta, Ontario, Quebec, and Prince Edward Island. But for MuchMusic fans, the competition is about to heat up even more. Fans can hit up muchmusic.com until Oct. 25 to support and interact with their favorite VJ hopefuls. Then it’s adios to half the VJ candidates as the Top 16 is narrowed down to eight semi-finalists on Monday, Oct. 26.

Job description: Interviewing the best bands in the business, meeting fans, travelling across the country, and being able to work efficiently in an environment with extremely high decibel levels (screaming fans, loud bands, etc.) at the iconic MuchMusic HQ. Last night MJ received a tribute fit for a king, Kanye acted out, and Taylor Swift got a second chance to enjoy her moment courtesy of Beyoncé. MuchMusic’s combined broadcast of both the MTV VMAs ’09 RED CARPET and 2009 MTV VIDEO MUSIC AWARDS had a reach of nearly 2.2 million total viewers tuning into some part of the show***. A total of 535,000 viewers were glued to the tube as they watched 2009 MTV VMAs in its entirety, making it the second most-watched program in MuchMusic’s history*. It’s a once in a lifetime television event. Janet Jackson opens the 2009 MTV VIDEO MUSIC AWARDS with a tribute to her brother Michael. Airing exclusively in Canada on MuchMusic, Sunday, Sept. 13 at 9 p.m. ET, the blockbuster awards show is preceded by MTV VMAs ’09 RED CARPET at 8 p.m. ET. Soulful songstress Alicia Keys gets added to the mix as she joins JAY-Z onstage to perform “Empire State of Mind” from his new album The Blueprint 3. Hot, new presenters include Canadian singing sensation Justin Bieber, along with Megan Fox, Jimmy Fallon, Jennifer Lopez, Shakira, Jack Black, 50 Cent, Andy Samberg, Kristin Cavallari, Pete Wentz, Gerard Butler, Tracy Morgan, Adam Brody, Jamie-Lynn Sigler, Alexa Chung, and Gabe Saporta of Cobra Starship. Rap star Eminem also makes a special appearance.
