The CRTC approves nine new non-Canadian satellite services including Al Jazeera

The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) released three public notices today approving the addition of nine new non-Canadian third-language services to the lists of eligible satellite services and denied six others. The authorized services will enable Canadians to benefit from new programs, principally in Spanish, Arabic, German and Romanian.

CRTC Proposes More Ad Time in Exchange for More Canadian Content

In a public notice issued today, the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) seeks comment on a proposed package of incentives designed to encourage the broadcast of more original, high-quality hours of Canadian English-language drama, as well as to increase viewing to and expenditures on this type of programming. In another public notice to be released shortly, the Commission will propose separate measures designed to ensure the continued presence of high-quality, original French-language Canadian drama in peak time.

Cable industry disappointed CRTC denies application to add popular U.S. stations

The Canadian Cable Television Association has expressed regret that the CRTC turned down its application to add popular U.S. channels like HBO and ESPN to digital cable lineups without any opportunity for Canadian television viewers to make their voices heard. At the same time CCTA remains encouraged that the door is still open for future applications.

The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) has asked for comments from the public on how it could better support the production and broadcast of high-quality, original English-language Canadian TV drama, as well as attract larger audiences to Canadian English-language drama programs. At the same time, the CRTC also asked for input on how it could help ensure the continued production and broadcast of popular, original French-language Canadian drama.

CRTC Releases Statistical and Financial Report on Television

The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) today issued its annual statistical and financial report on Canadian television. The report, Television, statistical and financial summaries, provides data for the years 1998 to 2002. A comparison of 1998 revenues and spending for private television with the same data for 2002 shows that both revenues and spending have remained essentially constant. In fact, over that period, revenues grew by 3.6 per cent and spending by 4.5 per cent.
