Production news: marblemedia Brings Skatoony Across the Pond

marblemedia announced today that it has acquired the North American format rights to produce a version of the popular Cartoon Network U.K. series Skatoony. Currently in its third season on Cartoon Network, the successful television program pits real kids against cartoon characters in an animated quiz game show format. The first season enters production this spring and will shoot 13 half-hour English and 13 half-hour French episodes. The series, aimed at kids aged 8 to 12, has been commissioned for TELETOON Canada and is set to premiere in Spring 2010.

General News: Canwest announces strategic review of five conventional television stations

Canwest Global Communications Corp (“Canwest” or the “Company”) announced today that it is exploring strategic options for five of its conventional television stations, CJNT-TV in Montreal, CHCH-TV in Hamilton, CHCA-TV in Red Deer, CHBC-TV in Kelowna and CHEK-TV in Victoria.

The sale of the stations is one of several options being considered by the Company following an internal review. RBC Capital Markets has been retained to assist in this process.

Sports Programming: NHL Network to Broadcast Upcoming AHL Games

The NHL Network today announced it has reached an agreement for broadcast rights to games of the American Hockey League (AHL), the NHL's top development league. The broadcast package provides the NHL Network in both Canada and the U.S. with six live match-ups over the rest of the 2008-09 regular season.

New Channels: CTV Goes High Definition in Calgary

Last wednesday, CTV Inc. announced it has completed installation of an over-the-air (OTA) High Definition transmitter in Canada’s third-largest English language television market. “CTV HD Calgary” is now transmitting from CTV Calgary’s Patina Rise headquarters. CTV becomes the only broadcaster now transmitting over-the-air in High Definition in Calgary and, with similar operations in Vancouver and Toronto, CTV also now becomes Canada’s only broadcaster to have HD transmitters in all three markets metered by BBM Nielsen Media Research.
