Production news: Stitch Media and OMNI Television partner on Chinese Head Tax Redress documentary and web project

Stitch Media and OMNI Television announced today that they are partnering on a new project that tackles one of the most controversial Canadian government decisions of our time: the official 2006 apology to the Chinese Canadian community. Filming on the three-part documentary component of the project will begin in Vancouver and move across the country while an interactive website is also being developed concurrently.

Production news: W Network Annouces New Original Series Set For Production

Corus Entertainment’s W Network, Canada’s #1 specialty channel for women, announced today that it will be producing two new series this summer. Working with Vancouver’s Worldwide Bag Media, Anna & Kristina’s Style Bag (working title) will go into production this July and the docu-soap The Cupcake Girls, from Vancouver-based Force Four Entertainment, will start production later this month.

Production news: Family Channel and Playhouse Disney Canada Announce Slate of Canadian Original Productions

Astral Media’s Family Channel and Playhouse Disney Canada today announced the commissioning of six new and returning Canadian original productions. New series for Family Channel include half-hour comedies Angel on Campus (Temple Street Productions) and Baxter (Shaftesbury Films), which join new seasons of returning series including the second season of Connor Undercover (Heroic Film Company/Shaftesbury Films) and the third season of Overruled! (Shaftesbury Films). Playhouse Disney Canada has commissioned two new animated series for younger audiences, Stella and Sam (Radical Sheep Productions) and Justin Time (Guru Studio), which join the previously announced new seasons of popular series The Secret World of Benjamin Bear (Amberwood Entertainment) and Franny’s Feet (Decode Entertainment). Production begins in Toronto for all series in late summer/fall 2009, with broadcast premieres slated for 2010 and 2011.

Production news: TMN & MC Greenlight Seven New Original Productions

Corus Entertainment's Movie Central (Western Canada) and Astral Media's The Movie Network (Eastern Canada) today announced that seven new Canadian original projects have been greenlit for production. Featuring some of Canada's top creative talent, this new slate includes original series Bloodletting, Phantom, The Pillars of the Earth, Living In Your Car, Meet Phil Fitz, Durham County and the made for television movie Fakers.

Production news: Paperny Films' THE 100-MILE CHALLENGE Sold to Dicovery's Planet Green in the U.S.

London-based Passion Distribution has concluded a distribution agreement with Vancouver-based Paperny Films for both completed programme and format rights to topical reality series produced for Food Network Canada, THE 100-MILE CHALLENGE. This is the first time the two companies have worked together. Passion proves it is up to the challenge by immediately selling the series to Discovery’s Planet Green in the United States.

Apartment 11 Productions and Bakermedia are pleased to announce that CBBC has picked-up a third season of the highly-rated UK-version of "Prank Patrol" (10 x 30'). Montreal-based Apartment 11 Productions - who created the concept for the series - licensed the format to the UK-based Bakermedia in 2006. Bakermedia begins production on the UK-version of "Prank Patrol" season three in June 2009. The series will air in 2010.

As auditions continue in Toronto today for SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE CANADA, Bravo! is pleased to announce that NUREYEV stars Season 1 winner Nico Archambault. NUREYEV is directed by award-winning filmmaker Moze Mossanen (ROXANA, THE RINGS OF SATURN), and uses mostly dance and choreography to portray the tumultuous life of the famed dance great. Auditions for SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE CANADA come to a close in Montréal next week on Tuesday, May 26 at Théâtre St-Denis.

Production news: Sinking Ship's "THE OCEAN ROOM" Dives Into Production

Sinking Ship Entertainment is pleased to announce that principal photography has started for “The Ocean Room,” the second installment of the highly-rated preschool reality series “The Jungle Room.” During the six week production, the cameras will follow the unpredictable preschool adventures of seven new charismatic kids – aged between 3 and 6 – over the course of six weeks at a Scarborough Community Centre. Teacher Anthony Randall returns for the second installment. “The Ocean Room” – with 26 x 11’ episodes – premieres in September 2009 on TVO, ACCESS Alberta and The Knowledge Network.

MTV Canada, CTV and Free Form Productions Inc. announced late last month that production has begun in Whistler, British Columbia on the unscripted, half-hour, original documentary series PEAK SEASON. Filmed in the world-class ski resort and site of the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games, the series takes an unfiltered look at the lives, loves and true-life drama of a tight-knit group of twenty-somethings, coming of age in the resort town where relationships change as often as the weather.
