Discovery Civilization unveils fall programming highlights
Posted on Tuesday, July 05, 2005 - 06:42 PM
Discovery Science

New to Discovery Civilization Channel: America’s Secret Warriors, Heroin Highway, The Marrying Tribe of the Amazon, Cannibalism: The Last Taboo, Revolution on Wheels and Buyology.  Returning anthology series include: Masters of the Universe, Passages, On the Edge, Heroes and Rogues, Pyramids, Mummies and Tombs, Lost Worlds and Flashback.

Discovery Civilization Channel:
From illuminating crime and punishment to exploring global cultural traditions, Discovery Civilization Channel presents several new specials this fall that illustrate the breadth of human experience. With the ever-present threat of global terrorism, U.S. government agencies are using Special Forces more often to fight on these modern battlefields. America’s Secret Warriors goes inside SOCOM – Special Operations Command, one of the primary forces fighting against these threats.  SOCOM is its own branch of the Armed Forces with 44,000 special commandos drawn from the Army, Air Force and Navy, most notably, from the U.S. Navy Seals and the U.S. Army Special Forces Green Berets. Watch how these groups function and see exclusive footage of U.S. Special Forces in Afghanistan and U.S. Navy Seals operating worldwide.  Turning to a criminal epidemic on U.S. soil, Heroin Highway traces the illicit path of heroin, beginning with a deadly incident with an addict in the western United States. This documentary follows the transportation and distribution networks for the narcotic around the globe. It traces the fatal heroin dose illustrated at the beginning of the program to its point of origin, a former Northern Alliance commander from northern Afghanistan. In exchange for fighting the Taliban he received a special concession from the Americans – the freedom to cultivate poppies.

This fall, Discovery Civilization Channel explores the cultural traditions of the Amazonian Zoë tribe and reveals a shocking tradition rooted in the ancestral people of Southwest Colorado in two new specials. The Marrying Tribe of the Amazon follows the multiple-marriage practice of the Zoë tribe. Polygamy and polyandry are a way of life for these people who don’t believe in the familial structure most common in western culture. And in this society, it seems to work – there is no jealousy or rivalry between men sharing the same wife or wives sharing the same husband, and an equitable and efficient division of labour means more leisure time for the entire extended family.  Cannibalism: The Last Taboo examines the fate of the Anasazi Indians – ancestors of the modern Pueblo tribe of Southwest Colorado. One thousand years ago the Anasazi Indians were an advanced society renowned for its artistry, sophisticated social structure, architecture and urban planning. But recent findings point to violence and warfare as the cause of the Anasazi’s demise – and have revealed a much darker secret – that cannibalism may have contributed to the decline of this otherwise peaceful tribe.

Whether it’s the roar of the engine or the “cha-ching” of the charge card, Discovery Civilization Channel examines the passion for motorcycles and for shopping. Revolution on Wheels explores how the world fell in love with the motorcycle and chronicles its transformation from a humble motorized bicycle at the beginning of the 20th century to a powerful, status-making machine in only a few decades. This one-hour special examines the latest advances in racing technology, as well as the dynamic connection between popular culture, socio-political forces and motorcycle design – all factors that have led to the success of this legendary vehicle.  And for those whose passions lean more towards buying than biking, Buyology is a two-part special that reveals the psychological drive behind shopping, the irresistible power of our consumer culture and the secrets of savvy retailers. Travel to retail hotspots around the world from Chicago’s Niketown to Istanbul’s Grand Bazaar, the Gianfranco Ferre boutique on L.A.’s Rodeo Drive and Minneapolis’ vast Mall of America. Psychologists, sales clerks and “retail anthropologists” explain exactly how people are parted from their money. The special also reveals what happens when guilty pleasures become compulsive habits and where the future of shopping lies.

Discovery Civilization Channel’s popular anthology series, including Masters of the Universe, Passages, On the Edge, Heroes and Rogues, Pyramids, Mummies and Tombs, Lost Worlds and Flashback also return to this fall.
