New show gives global insight into the world of modern media

CBC Newsworld

In a media-dominated world of spin, celebrity endorsement and round-the-clock news, CBC Newsworld brings viewers THE DESK, the BBC's new media show presented by Tyler Brűlé, the Canadian journalist and founder of Wallpaper*. This weekly, magazine-style show launches the first of 10 episodes Saturday, Jan. 29 at 7 p.m. ET on CBC Newsworld.

THE DESK will cover any aspect of the industry, in any location. With strong international focus, we want to be the first to identify the players, forces and brands which drive this sector,'' explains Tyler Brűlé.

Heaton Dyer, director of programming for CBC Newsworld comments: "With its thoughtful take on the story behind the spin and global look at the swiftly changing world of media, THE DESK will be an important addition to CBC Newsworld. It will report on the challenges facing media organizations around the world, as well as the trends that are winning favour with audiences and readers. It will also complement our own Inside Media which is currently on hiatus".

Filmed on location at the BBC studios in London, THE DESK covers media stories from a global perspective. Subjects might range from a rise of ethnic media in the North of England to a look at the role the Russian government played in the disclosure of information as witnessed following the Beslan disaster. Both international and innovative, provocative and pertinent, THE DESK aims to open windows on worlds viewers never knew existed, while offering refreshing perspectives on more familiar turf.

THE DESK contains a mix of feature interviews, documentaries and behind-the-scenes insight. With its flexible format, no two shows will be alike. One week, there may be a set piece interview; on other editions, the show will be used as a gateway for a documentary. THE DESK promises content that is arresting and agenda setting.

THE DESK uses its title as a metaphor for all things media*whether it be the news desk, assignment desk, mixing desk or photo desk. In an age where we're supposed to be completely wireless, the desk is still an essential feature in all aspects of the media.
