Two hours special for Tsunami aid to air on OMNI Television
Posted on Thursday, January 06, 2005 - 09:47 AM
OMNI1

On Sunday, January 9th, OMNI Television will present a special two-hour fundraising appeal developed in partnership with Canadians For Tsunami Relief (C.T.R.), a registered non-profit organization formed by local businesses, ethnocultural communities and social organizations to further enhance Canada's contribution to relief efforts.

The CTR Appeal Special will air commercial-free from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. on OMNI.2, and from 9:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. on OMNI.1. Donation hotlines 1-866-444-8993 and 416-296-9595 will be available during this time, staffed by multilingual volunteers organized through the Yee Hong Community Wellness Foundation.

Also thanks to Yee Hong, an exclusive account has been set up with TD Canada Trust to accommodate donations raised by The CTR Appeal Special: bank account No. 532-521-1313 (or viewers can make cheques payable to C.T.R.). Funds raised will go to the Canadian Red Cross and Oxfam Canada for disaster
relief in affected countries.

"We're pleased to respond with OMNI's substantial strength in multilingual/multicultural communications in full support of this international humanitarian effort," says Madeline Ziniak, Vice President and Station Manager. "Our focus with The CTR Appeal Special will be two-fold: to share our common bond and to encourage contributions from the local South Asian and Chinese communities by reaching out to them in their language of comfort -- we're counting on an enthusiastic show of support from our viewers."

The CTR Appeal Special will feature appeals and the latest news coverage
produced in at least five languages - Cantonese, Hindi, Mandarin, Sinhalese and Tamil - in addition to English. Story items scheduled include: response from local community leaders, an interview with Prime Minister Martin and other senior politicians on Canadian relief efforts, and coverage of national memorial services held in Ottawa.

C.T.R. is chaired by renowned humanitarian Dr. Joseph Y.K. Wong, who is also Chair of the Yee Hong Community Wellness Foundation and the Yee Hong Centre for Geriatric Care.
