Posted on Wednesday, November 24, 2004 - 01:02 PM
CBC

"This guy invented the modern age!" "He changed the lives of every single Canadian." "His legacy is unparalleled." "No question. He is the Greatest Canadian of all time!"

Expect passionate arguments and fierce debate this Sunday, when the Advocates for the Top 10 Greatest Canadian nominees face off in a battle of words and wit in THE GREATEST CANADIAN's The Final Showdown, airing Sunday, Nov. 28 at 8 p.m. (8:30 NT) on CBC Television.

Filmed in front of a studio audience of hundreds, this two-hour extravaganza features the 10 advocates making their best, final arguments for the last votes of Canadians. Each will have to defend his or her nominee against the counter-arguments of the other advocates in this no-holds-barred match, hosted by Wendy Mesley and Shaun Majumder. Themes include leadership, legacy, genius and passion.

The Final Showdown also features highlights of campaigns that have ignited across the country, and special guests supporting different nominees, including (among others): musician Sam Roberts and former NDP leader Ed Broadbent, for Tommy Douglas; athlete Perdita Felicien, for Sir Frederick Banting; (Ret) Lt. Gen. Lewis Mackenzie, in support of Lester B. Pearson; former Maple Leaf captain Darryl Sittler cheering for Terry fox; and Justin Trudeau, for his father Pierre Trudeau.

This is the last chance for viewers to place their votes in the race to name The Greatest Canadian of All. The last voting window opens at the start of Sunday's episode, at 8 p.m., and closes at midnight (local) that night. Canadians can vote at www.cbc.ca/greatest, by toll-free phone at 1-866-303- 8683 and by text message. Voting details are at www.cbc.ca/greatest.

Then, Canada's choice for THE GREATEST CANADIAN OF ALL is revealed in a special live broadcast on Monday, Nov. 29 at 8 p.m. (8:30 NT). How will the final showdown sway the votes of Canadians? Find out when co-hosts Wendy Mesley and Shaun Majumder reveal the exciting voting results, counting down from 10 to the no. 1 spot. Who will Canadians name as their Greatest of All? Just a few more days remain until the results are revealed!

NOTE: Encore presentations of the feature episodes on each of the Top 10 Greatest Canadians will air during CBC Newsworld's GREATEST CANADIAN MARATHON, this weekend, beginning at 2 p.m. ET, on Saturday, Nov. 27.
