Rogers Media has reached an agreement to purchase NOWTV, a local Vancouver over-the-air religious television broadcaster, and a licence for a Winnipeg television service, from Trinity Television Inc. The Vancouver station was licenced by the CRTC in 2000 and the Winnipeg station in 2002. The transfer of ownership will require CRTC approval.
Trinity Television launched NOWTV in 2001 in Vancouver. The station
broadcasts religious television programming for all ages out of Surrey and
Rogers has committed to maintain the current Vancouver workforce.
"We are very excited by this opportunity", stated Rael Merson, President
and CEO, Rogers Broadcasting Ltd. "Rogers is a niche player in television and
we are always interested in opportunities to serve underserved segments of the
population. We're also pleased that the Thiessens have agreed to remain
involved with the Rogers' management of these stations."
"Since being licenced, undercapitalization has impacted the operation of
this station. We are pleased that Rogers is convinced of the opportunity and
is committed to fulfilling our dream of building these television services",
stated Jeff Thiessen, Senior Vice President, Trinity Television Inc. "We look
forward to working with Rogers."
Rogers Media Inc., a division of Rogers Communications Inc., (TSX: RCI.A
and RCI.B; NYSE: RG) operates Rogers Broadcasting and Rogers Publishing.
Rogers Broadcasting has 43 AM and FM radio stations across Canada. Television
properties include Toronto multicultural television broadcasters OMNI.1 (CFMT)
and OMNI.2, televised and electronic shopping service, The Shopping Channel,
regional sports channel, Rogers Sportsnet and the management of three digital
television services. Rogers Publishing produces many well-known consumer
magazines such as Maclean's, Chatelaine, Flare, L'actualité and Canadian
Business, and is the leading publisher of a number of trade publications. Most
media properties are integrated with their own popular web sites.
