Olympics on CNBC: Why not in Canada?
Posted on Friday, August 13, 2004 - 11:16 PM
Editorial

In every Olympic game since 2000, CNBC has gotten the rights to air the Olympics on their network as part of NBC Universal's Olympic coverage, which they have gotten the rights to through 2012. CNBC is straight from the US, not altered into a Canadian format, unlike MSNBC and Bravo!, which are both also owned by NBC Universal in the US. Why is it that CNBC is censored in Canada so that the Olympics do not air in this country?

We get this network fair and square in Canada, 100% NBC-owned, yet NBC stations across Canada get to keep airing their Olympic coverage, while CNBC has to cover up their Olympic coverage because of situations involving Canadian broadcasters or the CRTC, which are extremely ridiculous! While the MSNBC situation is quite different, I don't think there are any problem with CNBC providing addition Olympic coverage to Canadians, and I feel it can compliment us viewers so dearly.

While the CRTC will likely keep us from ever seeing the rest of the networks of NBC, I think we're lucky to go this far with a US-only feed of CNBC, and I feel that it should stay that way throughout the Olympics. The question is: why not?

Note: I think you'll find that it is copyright issues, the Olympics TV rights are sold by territory and CNBC likely does not hold the rights to air the games in Canada, NBC may be treated slightly different since these are sourced from OTA signals at the Canadian borders and Canadian copyright laws allow those to be retranmitted in unaltered form (outside of simsub rules I guess).
