ESPN Classic Canada has lined up a season of classic sports moments, featuring some of the most memorable events that have shaped sports history.
ESPN Classic Canada’s 2002/03 season includes:
Classic U.S. Open Golf Week
ESPN Classic Canada steps to the tee in June with Classic U.S. Open Golf Week. The swinging action begins with the 1968 U.S. Open in Rochester, NY, on Monday, June 10 at 9 p.m. (all times Eastern) as Lee Trevino captures the title and becomes the first player to complete four rounds under 70. Classic U.S. Open coverage continues daily through to Sunday, June 16. TSN will televise live coverage of the 2002 U.S. Open Championship beginning Thursday, June 13. ESPN Classic Canada will also televise Classic U.S. Open Golf Week in June 2003.
CFL Kickoff
ESPN Classic Canada warms up the pigskin with CFL Kickoff from June 22 – 26. Gearing up for the return of an Ottawa CFL franchise this season, ESPN Classic Canada highlights a different classic Ottawa Rough Riders game daily on June 24, 25 and 26. ESPN Classic Canada will also air the 1987 Western Semifinal with Calgary vs. Edmonton on Saturday, June 22 at noon, and the 1988 Eastern Final with Winnipeg vs. Toronto on Sunday, June 23 at noon. TSN’s live 2002 CFL coverage gets underway with a Wendy’s Friday Night Football doubleheader on Friday, June 28.
ESPN Classic Canada Day
On July 1, ESPN Classic Canada pays tribute to our country with ESPN Classic Canada Day from noon – midnight, featuring all-Canadian sports classics. Event coverage includes: Classic World Junior Hockey: 1991 Final – Canada vs. Soviet Union; 1993 World Series: Game 6 – Philadelphia @ Toronto; and 1967 Stanley Cup® – Montreal @ Toronto. ESPN Classic Canada Day will return in 2003.
Classic British Open Week
ESPN Classic Canada preps fans with Classic British Open Week, highlighting past British Opens nightly from July 15 – 17 at 9 p.m. Titles include The Legend of the British Open, A Century of the British Open, and A to Z of the British Open. TSN‘s live 2002 British Open coverage starts Thursday, July 18.
’72 Summit Series 30th Anniversary
ESPN Classic Canada celebrates the ’72 Summit Series in September, televising all eight games of Canada’s finest hour in International Hockey. Each of the eight games will be broadcast 30 years to the day the game was played in 1972.
Goodbye to the Expos
With the issue of contraction looming, it is likely that the 2002 season will be the last for the Montreal Expos. With more than 30 years of baseball in Montreal coming to an end, ESPN Classic Canada will pay tribute in September to the Expos with two classic games and a collection of classic moments.
Oh Canada! – 1992 World Series – 10 Years to the Day
October 2002 marks the 10-year anniversary of the first of back-to-back World Series wins for the Toronto Blue Jays – one of the most dramatic wins in Canadian sports history. ESPN Classic Canada will air each game 10 years to the day beginning on October 17.
Grey Cup Week
Without a doubt, November is the most exciting time of year for CFL fans. ESPN Classic Canada will relive all the greatest moments with its classic Grey Cup Games, which will be televised November 18 – 23.
Classic IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship
The IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship has grown into a national holiday tradition. In December, ESPN Classic Canada looks back at the greatest teams and players that have laced up their skates in the annual competition.
Super Bowl Week
In January 2003, ESPN Classic Canada takes a look at the greatest games and moments in NFL history.
The Scott Tournament of Hearts
ESPN Classic Canada celebrates the Canadian Women’s Curling Championship in February 2003 with a series of classic draws, which will be televised the day before the 2003 tournament begins.
Major League Baseball Season Opening
The smell of hot dogs and peanuts, the crispness of spring air and the excitement of the new season will all be relived in March 2003 as ESPN Classic Canada celebrates the best of Major League Baseball.
The Nokia Brier
In March 2003, ESPN Classic Canada looks back at some of the greatest players and matches at The Brier, a Canadian event rich in history and tradition.
Classic Masters Week
In April 2003, ESPN Classic Canada breaks out the green jacket and looks back at perhaps the most prestigious of all the golf majors – The Masters – reliving the history and magic of the Augusta Golf and Country Club.
The Indy 500
In May 2003, ESPN Classic Canada looks at the history of the Indy 500 and the names that have become legendary on the track in Indianapolis.
