HBO Canada's Winter 2010 Programming Highlights

New series coming to HBO Canada this winter include How To Make It In America, The ricky Gervais show and The Pacific. Also, new seasons of Big Love, Real Time With Bill Maher, the Life and Time of Tim and more!

HBO ORIGINAL SERIES

Big Love (Season 4)
Premieres Sunday, January 10 at 9 p.m. (9 x 60 min; drama)

In season four of HBO’s polygamous drama that follows Bill Henrickson, his three wives and now-nine children, Bill launches yet another business venture amidst a swirl of personal issues that plague him. At the same time, Bill considers a run for the State Senate in Utah and the chance to seize the Prophet mantle at Juniper Creek. Starring Bill Paxton, Jeanne Tripplehorn, Chloë Sevigny and Ginnifer Goodwin.

How To Make It In America (New Series)
Premieres Sunday, February 14 at 10 p.m. (8 x 30 min; comedy)

This half-hour comedy series s follows two enterprising twentysomethings who hustle their way through New York determined to achieve the American dream and make a name for themselves in the Big Apple’s fashion scene. Executive produced by Mark Wahlberg, Rob Weiss and Steve Levinson, the series stars Bryan Greenberg, Victor Rasuk, Lake Bell, Samaire Armstrong and Shannyn Sossyman.

Real Time With Bill Maher (Season 8)
Premieres Friday, February 19 at 9 p.m. (60 min; comedy)

HBO’s irrepressible, politically incorrect muse, Bill Maher returns for an eigth season of his HBO original series that offers viewers a unique perspective on contemporary issues. Each live edition of the series includes an opening monologue, roundtable discussions with panelists, and interviews with in-studio and satellite guests.

The Ricky Gervais Show (New Series)
Premieres Friday, February 19 at 10 p.m. (13 x 30 min; comedy)

This new animated series is based on podcasts and audiobooks from the popular UK comedy show hosted by Ricky Gervais, Stephen Merchant and Karl Pilkington. The show will feature the same banter between the comedian and his sidekicks Merchant and Pilkington, with animation accompanying original recordings of the trio.

The Life and Times of Tim (Season 2)
Premieres Friday, February 19 at 10:30 p.m. (10 x 30 min; comedy)
This animated, adult comedy series about Tim, a twenty-something ordinary New Yorker who can’t seem to catch a break in life returns for a second season. Tim’s world revolves around his live-in girlfriend Amy, who just wants him to be like her friends’ boyfriends; Debbie, a local prostitute who tests Amy’s patience; The Boss, who promises Tim a series of promotions in exchange for corporate misdeeds; Rodney, The Boss’s obnoxious assistant with a passion for hockey and porn; and Stu, Tim’s best friend. Created, written, produced and voiced by Steve Dildarian.

The Pacific (Original Miniseries)
Premieres Sunday, March 14, 2010 (10 x 60 min; drama)
Executive produced by Tom Hanks, Steven Spielberg and Gary Goetzman, this epic ten-hour miniseries tracks the intertwined odysseys of three U.S. Marines – Robert Leckie, Eugene Sledge and John Basilone– across the vast canvas of the Pacific. The extraordinary experiences of these men and their fellow marines take them from the first clash with the Japanese in the haunted jungles of Guadalcanal, through the impenetrable rain forests of Cape Gloucester, across the blasted coral strongholds of Peleliu, up the black sand terraces of Iwo Jima, through the killing fields of Okinawa, to the triumphant, yet uneasy, return home after V-J Day. Starring James Badge Dale, Joe Mazzello and Jon Seda.

Diagnosis Bipolar: Five Families Search For Answers (Documentary)
Premieres Wednesday, January 13 at 8 p.m. (1 x 49 min: documentary)

This one-hour documentary follows five American families as they deal with the struggles, hopes and fears that arise from raising young children diagnosed with the controversial Bipolar Mood Disorder, a diagnosis now applied to approximately 800,000 children in the United States. Shot over the course of 12 months, the documentary shows the dramatic differences in the children’s behavior both on and off medication, and reveals the emotional and difficult decisions these parents must make to ensure their children are properly cared for.

A Family is a Family: A Rosie O’Donnell Celebration (Documentary)
Premieres, Sunday, January 31 at 7 p.m. (1 x 40 min; documentary)

In this 40-minute documentary, celebrity Rosie O’Donnell celebrates what it means to be a family. Comprised of original songs, musical performances and recordings by the likes of Ziggy Marley, Bonnie Raitt, Doris Day and Frank Sinatra, the documentary provides a moving portrait of the remarkable diversity of families today, including same-sex parents, mixed-heritage families and stories of adoption.

Temple Grandin (Original Film)
Premieres Saturday, February 6 at 8 p.m. (drama)

Based on the true story of the best-selling author, animal scientist and autism advocate, Temple Grandin whose own autism has afforded her uncanny powers of observation. Grandin’s insight in the complexities of animal behavior has revolutionized the cattle industry. Starring Claire Danes, Catherine O’Hara, Julia Ormond and David Strathairn.

Bill Maher…But I’m Not Wrong (Comedy Special)
Premieres Saturday, February 13 at 10 p.m. (1 x 60 min; comedy)

Airing live from Progress Energy Center in Raleigh, North Carolina, this original comedy special features a stand-up performance from Bill Maher, the controversial, opinionated and revered comedian and host of HBO's Real Time With Bill Maher.

Bloodletting & Miraculous Cures (The Movie Network Original Series)
Premieres Sunday, January 10 at 8 p.m. on HBO Canada (8 x 60 min; drama)

Based on the Scotiabank Giller Award-winning book by Vincent Lam and adapted by Governor General’s Award-winner Jason Sherman, Bloodletting & Miraculous Cures is an eight-part original series from The Movie Network and Movie Central that follows three talented, driven and conflicted doctors. The series draws back the curtain on the private and public lives of three brilliant young doctors – Fitz, Ming and Chen– as they navigate medical emergencies, perform surgeries and manage their own emotional triage. Starring Shawn Ashmore, Mayko Nguyen and Byron Mann.

Nasty Show 3 (Canadian Original Comedy Special)
Premieres Saturday, January 16 at 11 p.m. (1 x 60 min; comedy)

Comedian Bobby Slayton returns to the stage to host the third edition of this Canadian comedy special. Taped during the 2009 Just For Laughs Festival in Montreal, Quebec, the special will feature performances by Ari Shaffir, Jimmy Carr, Thea Vidale, Kurt Metzger and Mike Wilmot.

Less Than Kind (Season 2; Canadian Original Series)
Premieres Friday, February 19 at 8:30 p.m. on HBO Canada (30 min; comedy)

This half-hour Canadian comedy series follows overweight Winnipeg teenager Sheldon Blecher as he attempts to survive his awkward teenage years with a dysfunctional family that includes Sam Blecher, Sheldon’s self-destructive driving-instructor father; Anne Blecher, his unstable pyromaniac mother; and Josh Blecker, his failed-actor brother.

As season two begins, the abrasive Sam is at Death's door. But even Death won't answer when Sam comes knocking. As a result, Anne’s anxiety reaches a breaking point while Josh is torn between obligations to his dying acting career, family and his girlfriend. As the turmoil at home escalates, Sheldon is dealing with seismic developments of his own as his best friend - braceface Miriam Goldstein - is becoming more than just a friend. Together they endure the explosive shift from their life as innocent geeks to being sixteen - a world on the cusp of sex, drugs and even rock 'n roll.
