A Real-Life Crime Investigation Seeks To Unlock THE MYSTERY OF THE FLOATING FEET on CBC News Network
Posted on Tuesday, October 27, 2009 - 05:16 PM
CBC Newsworld

In May 2008, something bizarre washed ashore off the British Columbian coast—one right foot, still in its running shoe. The severed foot was one of four to turn up on shore in two months, kicking off one of the most puzzling forensic investigations in Canada. Speculation about who the feet belonged to ranged from victims of boating accidents to unrecovered plane crash victims, to possible victims of a serial killer or criminal gangs. Baffled, investigators turned to forensic experts who pushed the latest scientific techniques to their limits to try to solve the mystery. Read on for more documentaries.

CBC News Network presents The Mystery of the Floating Feet on THE PASSIONATE EYE, Monday, Nov. 2, at 10 p.m. ET/PT.

Police said there was no evidence to suggest the feet were intentionally severed, but that didn’t rule out possible foul play. As more feet washed up on the coast, forensic experts like Dr. Gail Anderson, a pioneer of a new technology called VENUS that monitors decay under the sea, tried to determine how long the feet had been in the sea. B.C. oceanographer Curtis Ebbesmeyer uses the latest science to study the drifting patterns of sneakers released into ocean currents in an effort to figure out where they might have come from. Produced by Anna Fitch, The Mystery of the Floating Feet takes us deep inside the latest “CSI” science and helps us understand how crime mysteries like this are solved.

Charles the Passionate Prince

The night before Prince Charles and his wife, Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, begin their first visit to Canada as a married couple, THE PASSIONATE EYE offers an encore presentation of the two-hour documentary, Charles the Passionate Prince, Sunday, Nov. 1, at 10 p.m. ET/PT, on CBC News Network. For one year, the BBC was granted an all-access pass to the life of the Prince of Wales while he was at home, abroad and on duty. This intimate portrait goes behind the headlines and gives viewers insight into the issues close to Prince Charles’ heart. Prince Charles has defied convention to become one of Britain’s most prolific and outspoken ambassadors. Charles the Passionate Prince lets viewers make up their own minds on the man who may one day be King. Charles the Passionate Prince was produced by Nick Vaughan-Barratt for the BBC.

Busting the Berlin Wall: Amazing Escape Stories

Witness some of the most daredevil escapes attempted during the Cold War. On the eve of the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, THE PASSIONATE EYE presents Busting the Berlin Wall: Amazing Escape Stories, Sunday, Nov. 8, at 10 p.m. ET/PT, on CBC News Network. For 28 years, until its collapse on Nov. 9, 1989, the Berlin Wall was the epicentre of the Cold War, splitting Berlin in two and dividing a nation with two-million tons of concrete, 700,000 tons of steel, attack dogs, tank traps, soldiers and tripwires. From the first day it went up, anyone who tried to escape risked prison or death.

While its dangers kept most East German citizens at bay, others were spurred on to overcome it, by digging under it, hiding in car trunks, flying over it in hot air balloons, commandeering subway trains, and even surfing around it. Using brilliant computer generated images (CGI animation) and dramatic recreations, Busting the Berlin Wall: Amazing Escape Stories examines these daredevil escapes, interviewing former border guards, politicians, spies and the people who risked everything in their bid to escape Communist East Germany for the West.

Busting the Berlin Wall: Amazing Escape Stories is also accompanied by exclusive online interactive ‘extras’ that offer more information about the construction and fall of the Berlin Wall, including video clips from the film and some of its amazing escape stories. The documentary is directed by Oliver Halmberger and produced for ZDF Germany.

The Warning
In the devastating aftermath of the global economic meltdown, The Warning airs on THE PASSIONATE EYE, Monday, Nov. 9, at 10 p.m. ET/PT, on CBC News Network. The film sifts through the ashes for clues about why it happened, and examines critical moments when the calamity might have been averted. At the centre, veteran PBS producer Michael Kirk (Inside the Meltdown) discovers Brooksley Born, the head of an obscure federal regulatory agency, the Commodity Futures Trading Commission. She speaks for the first time on television about her failed campaign to regulate the secretive, multi-trillion-dollar derivatives market whose crash helped trigger the financial collapse in the fall of 2008.

The Warning unearths the hidden history of North America’s worst financial crisis since the Great Depression, revealing the complicated politics that led to this catastrophe and what it may say about current attempts to prevent the next one. The film is a co-production between the Kirk Documentary Group and Frontline—written and directed by Michael Kirk.
