102 Minutes That Changed The World- A Personal View of Sept. 11 Makes its Canadian Debut as Part of the Lineup of Docs, Sept. 1 to 15 on CBC Newsworld
Posted on Monday, August 24, 2009 - 06:01 PM
CBC Newsworld

It’s 102 minutes the world will never forget—that’s how much time passed between the first plane that crashed into the World Trade Center and the collapse of the second tower, on Sept. 11, 2001. A new historical record is emerging from personal footage, photography and audio captured by survivors and onlookers near the scene.

Making its Canadian premiere, 102 Minutes that Changed the World, airing on CBC NEWS: THE PASSIONATE EYE, on Sunday, Sept. 13, at 10 p.m. ET/PT, on CBC Newsworld, is a two-hour documentary that provides a rare and intensely personal look at the world-changing events that took place on Sept. 11. This unique documentary carefully pieces together personal footage and audiotape from amateur photography and videos, New York police and emergency dispatch radio recordings, voicemails, audio/video diaries, and outtakes culled from raw television network footage, to create a seamless historical record of those 102 minutes. The result is an evocative memorial to the 2,603 lives lost and a reminder of just how much our world has changed since that tragic day.

This documentary faithfully records and captures the horrific morning as it happened and the way it was experienced—from people’s initial bewilderment that a plane could slam into these iconic skyscrapers on such a clear, sunny day, to the sudden, awful recognition that America was under attack. Many have said that society must never forget what happened on Sept. 11. 102 Minutes that Changed the World is an unprecedented attempt to capture the experience of that morning and preserve it as authentically as possible for future generations.

102 Minutes that Changed the World was produced by Nicole Rittenmeyer and edited by Seth Skundrick for A&E History Channel in the U.S.

Since Sept. 11, 2001, New York has become the centre of an epidemic of fear and anxiety that has rapidly spread through the western world. Airing on Tuesday, Sept. 15, at 10 p.m. ET/PT, on THE PASSIONATE EYE on CBC Newsworld, The Hidden Face of Fear reports on the studies of two of the world’s leading experts on fear and memory, Joseph LeDoux and Nobel Prize winner Eric Kandel, and how their findings have been used with patients at the Center for the Neuroscience of Fear and Anxiety in New York.

The Hidden Face of Fear tells three stories of people suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and Panic Disorder and how their brains were impacted by Sept. 11. This fascinating documentary also explores why these people were more vulnerable than other New Yorkers and whether they have ultimately overcome their fear. Directed by Enrico Cerasuolo and Sergio Fergnachino, The Hidden Face of Fear gives a fascinating look at how fear and anxiety can spread contagiously within and can gain control of our minds.

See highlights below from encore presentations of documentaries airing Sept. 1 to 15, on CBC Newsworld.

Saving Luna, airing Tuesday, Sept. 1, at 10 p.m. ET/PT, on CBC NEWS: THE LENS on CBC Newsworld, tells the true story of Luna, a baby killer whale who was separated from his family in 2001 and went looking for companions. The film follows Luna’s quest for “friends” that produced an intense debate between government officials, scientists, environmentalists and local natives, who all believed they knew what was in this beautiful mammal’s best interest.

In Jellyfish Invasion, airing on Wednesday, Sept. 2, at 10 p.m. ET/PT, on THE PASSIONATE EYE on CBC Newsworld, Australian jellyfish expert Jamie Seymour introduces viewers to the Irukandji jellyfish. This incredible animal is a translucent penny-sized creature that packs a deadly punch and is being spotted in swarms worldwide. In Japan, these giant jellyfish, known as Normuras, are not only growing in numbers, but wreaking havoc on the country’s fishing industry.

One of the most popular documentaries on THE PASSIONATE EYE last season, Who Killed the Electric Car? airs again, on Sunday, Sept. 6, at 10 p.m. ET/PT, on CBC Newsworld. It investigates what many consider to be one of the U.S. auto industry’s biggest corporate blunders: the scrapping of the General Motors-designed electric car in the 1990s. Fashioned like a tongue-in-cheek murder mystery, Who Killed the Electric Car? sets out to uncover who was responsible for the demise of the EV-1, an electric car considered to be one of the fastest and most efficient production cars ever built.

Currently, major auto companies are racing to launch a fully electric car into the consumer market. On Aug. 11, with great fanfare, GM announced it hopes its new Chevrolet Volt rechargeable electric car will be in showrooms next season with a fuel consumption rating of around 1.0 L/100 km for city driving, or 230 miles per U.S. gallon. (This figure has yet to be confirmed by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency).

Who Killed the Electric Car? is narrated by Martin Sheen. The writer/director and former EV-1 owner Chris Paine is currently at work on a sequel with the working title “Revenge of the Electric Car” (http://revengeoftheelectriccar.com), and is available for interviews.

9/11 Conspiracy Files: The Third Tower , a must-see for anyone who loves conspiracy theories airs on Monday, Sept. 7, at 10 p.m. ET/PT, and again on Friday, Sept. 11, on CBC NEWS: THE PASSIONATE EYE on CBC Newsworld. 9/11 Conspiracy Files: The Third Tower investigates the conspiracy theories that continue to swirl around Sept. 11, including the collapse of a third tower at the World Trade Center, which unlike the Twin Towers, was never hit by a plane. The 47-story tower fell seven hours after the other two crumbled and has become the subject of heated speculation and conspiracy theories largely fuelled by the internet. 9/11 Conspiracy Files: The Third Tower sets out to separate the facts from fiction.

School of Secrets airs on Tuesday, Sept. 8, at 10 p.m. ET/PT, on THE LENS on CBC Newsworld. This riveting documentary traces the outcome of an investigation into the sexual abuse of female students at Quest, an outdoor education program run by a prominent Vancouver high school in the 1970s. School of Secrets is a story of self-redemption for the women, who after years of silence, have decided to come forward. The documentary also explores the cautionary implications for the parents, the school and the community that turned a deaf ear and a blind eye to the rumours.

Sept. 8 will be the last broadcast of THE LENS. We would like to thank all of the talented independent filmmakers who have worked with THE LENS over the last three years and have helped the program garner two Gemini Award nominations as Best Documentary Series.

CBC continues its commitment to documentary programming on CBC Newsworld with nightly programs such as The Passionate Eye, on our main network, with Doc Zone and The Nature of Things, as well as the channel, documentary.

Crash: The Next Depression? airing Wednesday, Sept. 9, at 10 p.m. ET/PT, on THE PASSIONATE EYE on CBC Newsworld, analyzes the 2008 economic meltdown which began last September. It compares it to the 1929 crash, and examines the similarities between the resulting aftermath and how the Great Depression eventually ended. Weaving first person accounts with expert interviews, the documentary helps viewers not only understand the past but assess and question what the future may hold.

Conspiracy Files Lockerbie is an encore presentation, Monday, Sept. 14, at 10 p.m. ET/PT, on THE PASSIONATE EYE. The film investigates conspiracy theories that continue to haunt Britain’s worst terrorist attack, the bombing of Pan AM flight 103 that crashed in Lockerbie, Scotland, almost 21 years ago (Dec. 21, 1988). It also questions whether the right man was found guilty of the attack. The convicted bomber, Abdel Basset Ali al-Megrahi (who continues to maintain his innocence) is making headlines after being released from prison on compassionate grounds (Aug. 20). He’s terminally ill with prostate cancer and recently abandoned his appeal so he could be released. While many relatives of the victims are extremely angry that he has been allowed to return to Libya, others worry that the decision to abandon the appeal means they may never know the truth about the bombing.

A BBC production produced and directed by Guy Smith, Conspiracy Files Lockerbie follows the trail of evidence from the Middle East, through Europe and onto North America investigating the tangled web of claims and counter-claims that still surround the crash.
