| Canada Looks To Recapture 2000 Magic At 2009 Concacaf Gold Cup |

Rogers Sportsnet will broadcast Canada’s quest to capture the 2009 CONCACAF Gold Cup, starting Friday, July 3rd at 8 p.m. (ET)/6 p.m. (MT) when the home side faces Jamaica on Sportsnet Ontario and Sportsnet West channels.
Gerry Dobson will handle the play-by-play for all Canada games, while former Canadian soccer keeper Craig Forrest provides the analysis.
Canada is in Group A of the 12-team competition along with Costa Rica, El Salvador and Jamaica. All four teams will play each other throughout the opening round with all games being held in the United States.
Sportsnet carried Canada’s only Gold Cup victory when they defeated Colombia 2-0 in the final back in 2000. Canada took the championship on the heels of a stellar performance from Forrest, who was named tournament MVP and Most Valuable Goalkeeper for allowing just three goals and stopping two penalties in his side's five games.
Forrest sees a parallel between that victorious 2000 squad and this year’s Canadian team.
“In 2000, no one gave us a chance because we had to deal with the adversity of being ranked no. 12 out of the 12 competing teams,” said Forrest. “This year, Canada coach Stephen Hart will deal with a roster of lesser-known players due to many vets opting to remain with their club teams. This tournament will be great opportunity for the younger players to gain valuable international experience, players like Ali Gerba. Gerba is a big strong striker who will supply much-needed offence. Toronto FC fans will get a first look at the forward who just recently signed with the club.”
Canada’s last stop at the CONCACAF Gold Cup was in 2007 where they were eliminated in the semi-finals by the eventual champion U.S.
