| SUPER BOWL XLIII Delivers Super Audience: 4.3 Million Viewers in Canada |
| Posted
on Tuesday, February 03, 2009 - 04:10 PM |
SUPER BOWL XLIII attracted a super audience in Canada on CTV and RDS, with a combined 4.293 million viewers watching the Pittsburgh Steelers’ 27-23 victory over the Arizona Cardinals.* With 9.5 million viewers– or nearly one-in-three English-speaking Canadians – tuning in to some or all of the broadcast on CTV, preliminary overnight data from BBM Nielsen Media Research confirms that SUPER BOWL XLIII is the most-watched telecast of the year in Canada.
SUPER BOWL XLIII peaked at 4.6 million viewers at 10:02 p.m. ET, as Pittsburgh’s Santonio Holmes made a dramatic end-zone catch behind three Arizona defenders with 42 seconds left in the fourth quarter, clinching the Steelers’ record-setting sixth SUPER BOWL championship – the most-ever for a single franchise in NFL history.
“Audiences like this only come around a few times a year,” said Susanne Boyce, President, Creative, Content and Channels, CTV Inc. “The SUPER BOWL, like the ACADEMY AWARDS, are television events like no other.”
“This year’s SUPER BOWL audience confirms the power of mass media,” said Rick Brace, President, Revenue, Business Planning and Sports, CTV Inc. “Thank you to the dozens of advertisers who participated in the most-watched broadcast of the year.”
An average audience of 3.602 million watched the broadcast on CTV, on par with the 3.697 million that watched SUPER BOWL XLI on Global in 2007. Another 691,000 watched a French-language broadcast on RDS.
SUPER BOWL XLIII caps a successful year for the NFL in Canada, with regular season audiences up 27% on CTV and up 12% on TSN compared to last year.
Final SUPER BOWL XLIII audience numbers will be available in the coming weeks.
