CTV Goes High Definition in Calgary
Posted on Tuesday, February 03, 2009 - 04:06 PM
CTV

Last wednesday, CTV Inc. announced it has completed installation of an over-the-air (OTA) High Definition transmitter in Canada’s third-largest English language television market. “CTV HD Calgary” is now transmitting from CTV Calgary’s Patina Rise headquarters. CTV becomes the only broadcaster now transmitting over-the-air in High Definition in Calgary and, with similar operations in Vancouver and Toronto, CTV also now becomes Canada’s only broadcaster to have HD transmitters in all three markets metered by BBM Nielsen Media Research.

CTV Calgary’s leading line-up of top-rated programming – from AMERICAN IDOL, CSI and GREY’S ANATOMY to FLASHPOINT, CORNER GAS and the upcoming SUPER BOWL – is available in real time, in high definition, beginning immediately. CTV HD Calgary can be accessed by viewers with an HD-capable television equipped with a digital tuner and antenna on Channel 4.1. Additionally, CTV HD Calgary will replace CTV HD East on Channel 210 for Shaw Cable subscribers in Calgary and surrounding areas.

“Viewers can now watch Calgary’s most-watched programs in High Definition without time-shifting,” said Len Perry, General Manager and Vice-President, CTV Calgary. “As Calgary’s #1 television station, we are enormously proud to lead the way with this investment in our viewers.”

Today’s announcement represents the latest development in the multi-stage rollout of CTV Inc.’s Canadian HD strategy. CTV was the first national conventional broadcaster to transmit over-the-air in High Definition when its first HD transmitters began operating in Toronto and Vancouver in 2005. CTV was also the first national broadcaster to transmit a feed in High Definition when CTV HD East debuted in 2003, followed by CTV HD West in 2004. CTV has applied to the CRTC for additional transitional digital television licenses in other major Canadian markets.

CTV Calgary is a local affiliate of CTV, Canada’s largest private broadcaster. CTV Calgary signed on in September of 1960, and offers a wide range of quality news, sports, information, and entertainment programming, including 15 of the Top 20 programs in Calgary. CTV News prides itself on being Calgary’s #1 choice for news, weather, and information and continues to lead through active community participation and a dedication to intensive local coverage. CTV Calgary’s website, CTVcalgary.ca, is a leader in breaking news updates and severe weather warnings, and provides streaming video of local news stories. CTV Calgary employs more than 150 full and part-time staff. CTV is owned by CTVglobemedia, Canada's premier multimedia company.
