Corus Entertainment’s Movie Central (western Canada) and Astral Media’s The Movie Network (eastern Canada) introduce you to Tara Gregson – a seemingly normal suburban wife and mother of two who also happens to be a teenager, war veteran and 1950s-era housewife in Showtime’s United States of Tara. Premiering on Monday, January 19, 2009 at 8 p.m. PT on Movie Central and 9 p.m. ET on The Movie Network, this new half-hour dark comedy, executive produced by Academy Award®-winners Steven Spielberg and Diablo Cody, explores how a dysfunctional family copes with a mother who suffers from dissociative identity disorder.
United States of Tara stars Toni Collette as Tara, a wife and working mother who is dealing with dissociative identity disorder, and whose various personalities range from “T”, a provocative teenager who flirts around in midriffs and cutoffs; “Buck”, a beer-swilling, trucker-hat wearing Vietnam vet prone to violence; and “Alice”, a 1950s housewife who bakes pies in pumps with nary a meticulously hair-sprayed curl out of place.
The 12-part, half-hour series delves deep into Tara’s myriad identities and follows the day-to-day life of her loving but dysfunctional family which includes husband Max (John Corbett), and their teenaged children Kate (Brie Larson) and Marshall (played by Canadian actor Keir Gilchrist). While Max works hard to keep up with Tara’s alters and maintain some sense of normalcy for their children, Kate and Marshall continue to cope sympathetically with their mother’s unpredictable personalities that can change on a dime.
A co-production of Dreamworks Television and Showtime Networks, the first episode of United States of Tara is based on an idea by Spielberg, directed by Craig Gillespie and written by Cody.
Joining United States of Tara on Monday nights is the second season of Showtime’s risqué half-hour drama series Secret Diary of a Call Girl at 8:30 p.m. PT on Movie Central and 9:30 p.m. ET on The Movie Network. Starring Billie Piper as Belle, a high end London call girl, the series is inspired by a collection of blog entries written by a real-life London call girl named “Belle de Jour.” New episodes follow Belle as she continues to live her double life as Hannah, a smart and confident legal secretary, and Belle, one of the city’s best paid call girls and the answer to her clients’ wildest fantasies. Season two picks up as Belle begins to have misgivings about the elite courtesan job she was offered in the first season finale and discovers that the position may not be as ideal as she thought. In this new season, a journalist attempts to blackmail Belle after she is spotted with a high-profile client. She also finds trouble in the form of Bambi, a girl with aspirations of becoming Belle’s competition for her wealthy clientele.
United States of Tara and Secret Diary of a Call Girl will also be simulcast on Movie Central and The Movie Network’s High Definition channels and will be available on Movie Central On Demand the week following its network premiere and The Movie Network OnDemand the day following its network premiere.
