Rogers Wins New All News Television Licence

Rogers Media

Rogers Media today announced that the Canadian Radio-Television Commission (CRTC) has approved their application for an all news channel. The digital (category 2) licence granted was for a local 24-hour news channel to serve the city of Toronto and the Greater Toronto Area which includes Durham, York, Peel and Halton extending from Burlington in the west, to Clarington in the east, and to Brock in the north.

"We are extremely pleased with the CRTC decision today," says Jamie Haggarty, Executive Vice President, Operations, Rogers Media Television. "Torontonians and residents of the GTA will now be able to enjoy greater diversity when it comes to local news, weather and sports. Citytv's unique brand of news and information, complimented by our ethnically diverse OMNI stations is the perfect combination to deliver a full-time channel committed to the local perspective."

The channel will also include news items contributed from a number of Rogers owned media properties including The Fan 590, 680News, Sportsnet, Publishing and the Toronto Blue Jays. Rogers Media Television will be unveiling launch date and branding plans for the new channel at a later date.

"We are delighted with the mandate we were given today, to deliver around the clock news," comments Leslie Sole, CEO, Rogers Media Television. "This is especially timely as we move into a new era of choice and viewer-focused television, the facilities at Dundas Square in the heart of Toronto will be a great hub for this service, Ted would have been so happy that we are continuing and expanding our proud tradition of service to local communities."
