Simple Plan to Record Rock Version of CTV’s The Hockey Theme
Posted on Friday, October 10, 2008 - 04:56 AM
TSN

CTV Inc. announced today that Montreal’s Simple Plan is the first in a series of Canadian artists who will re-record special renditions of the iconic The Hockey Theme. Simple Plan will record their rendition today in Montreal. The Juno Award-winning band’s unique punk-pop version of the theme will debut during the Boston @ Montreal NHL game on TSN and RDS on Wednesday, Oct. 15 at 7:30 p.m. ET.

“Simple Plan is a great fit to be the first band to take the legendary theme and introduce it to a whole new legion of hockey fans,” said Mark Milliere, Vice President of Production, TSN. “They are popular, hard-hitting and extremely talented musicians – but most of all, they love the game of hockey.”

Simple Plan turned heads with a jaw-dropping version of the song at this year’s MuchMusic Video Awards. The song was used to introduce MMVA presenter and hockey superstar Jason Spezza. Simple Plan’s rock version of The Hockey Theme will be used in TSN and RDS broadcasts during intermissions at various points throughout the NHL season.

“This is a very cool and a huge honour for a bunch of die-hard hockey fans,” said Chuck Comeau, Simple Plan drummer. “This song was a huge part of our childhood and we are all stoked to have the chance to put our own ‘Simple Plan’ twist on it and to record it for the millions of hockey fans tuning into TSN and RDS.”

TSN and RDS will use a classic version of The Hockey Theme to introduce their slate of NHL games, beginning Tuesday, Oct. 14. RDS will debut the theme tonight to open their broadcast schedule of Montreal Canadiens games.

Last month, CTV Inc. carefully restored The Hockey Theme with a classic rendition recorded by 54 members of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra. Big, brassy and bold, the new recording revisits the original 1968 version, written by Vancouver’s Dolores Claman, and protects the legacy of “Canada’s second national anthem” for years to come.

TSN will broadcast 81 NHL games this season – plus playoff games with 71 games featuring at least one Canadian team. RDS is the official broadcaster for the Montreal Canadiens and will broadcast their full schedule of 82 games.

About Simple Plan

Following Simple Plan’s quadruple platinum debut release of No Pads, No Helmets...Just Balls in 2002, the band has released two subsequent albums, a live album, a DVD, had a string of radio hits with “I’d Do Anything,” “Addicted,” “Perfect,” and “Welcome To My Life,” crossed five continents, and played thousands of shows. Along the way, the band picked up a few hundred thousand fans and sold more than seven million albums worldwide. The band has been recognized with many awards in Canada over their career including multiple “Favorite Canadian Band” awards at the MuchMusic Video Awards.

Simple Plan recently released their self-titled third album and it has already surpassed platinum certification in Canada. The album is distributed by Lava/Atlantic Records. More information about Simple Plan may be found on the band’s website at www.simpleplan.com.
