The Knowledge Network Gets New Name and Goes All-Digital, 24 Hours a Day
Posted on Thursday, August 28, 2008 - 04:22 PM
General TV News

This fall, B.C.’s public educational media service builds on nearly 30 years of success with an exciting re-launch and new name. On Sunday, September 28, Knowledge – previously known as Knowledge Network – will be unveiled as a fully-upgraded, digital service. It will provide an expanded 24 hours a day of educational, commercial-free programming.

In July 2008, Knowledge was established as a crown corporation by the provincial government, reflecting its importance to the social and cultural fabric of B.C. This framework gives Knowledge the independence to grow its broadcast and internet services to become an integral part of British Columbia’s future.
“This is an exciting stage in our transformation,” says Rudy Buttignol, CEO of Knowledge. “We are continuing to support British Columbians in their lifelong pursuit of learning through television, web-streaming and video-on-demand. With our new digital service, extended 24/7 broadcasting and improved program schedule, we can bring audiences more of the unique, quality programming that they expect from us.”

Delivering programs with local, provincial and global perspectives, Knowledge challenges British Columbians to explore the world from different points of view. Programming will entertain, engage and educate audiences on issues of importance to them, such as climate change, sustainability, literacy, diversity and a healthy lifestyle. Knowledge will also take advantage of B.C.’s position as gateway to the Pacific Rim with a new emphasis on programming related to the Asia Pacific.

As part of its re-branding – which includes a new logo and station IDs – Knowledge’s enhanced broadcast schedule will provide destination viewing. Audiences will be able to tune in at certain times for specific program themes:

•“Kids…All Day, Every Day”: Each day from 6 a.m. – 6 p.m., Knowledge will bring its youngest viewers even more quality children’s programming.

•“Family Time…Early Evening, Every Evening”: Each day from 6 p.m. – 8 p.m., Knowledge will present programming appealing to the entire family.

•“Arts & Culture….All Night, Every Night”: Each night from 8 p.m. – 12 a.m., Knowledge will showcase programs that explore communities, cultures and histories from B.C. and around the world.

“With this re-launch, we want to engage existing viewers as well as a diverse new generation of British Columbians,” says Mr. Buttignol. “We hope viewers will find the new Knowledge to be transformative and inspiring – and that they will take what they discover and pass it on.”

FALL MPROGRAMMING HIGHLIGHTS

Pass it on….B.C.’s public educational media service is re-launching this fall with an expanded slate of programming, 24 hours a day. Knowledge is the destination for high quality, commercial-free documentaries and arts & culture programs from Canada and around the world.

Buttignol, CEO of Knowledge.
Viewers can tune in to Knowledge’s enhanced programming schedule beginning on Sunday, September 14. Themed timeslots will air throughout the week:

• RADIO CITY – The performing arts come alive in Knowledge’s new timeslot for music lovers. Opera, symphony and performance specials are on view every Wednesday evening at 9 p.m. beginning September 17.

• D&A – On Thursdays at 10 p.m. beginning September 25, Knowledge takes a look at the DNA of Design and Architecture. This season includes portraits of great architects such as Moshe Safdie, Daniel Libeskind and Frank Lloyd Wright.

• ROUTE 66 - Boomers rejoice! On Fridays at 10 p.m. beginning October 3, tune in for classic documentaries from the past. Knowledge takes viewers on an illuminating road trip through the last 40 years of documentary filmmaking.

“Our unique mix of programming will challenge British Columbians to explore the world from different points of view,” says Mr. Buttignol. “By informing and educating audiences on the topics that matter to them, our broadcast and Internet offerings will ensure that B.C.’s public educational media service continues to be a trusted alternative in the pursuit of knowledge.”
This fall, tune in to Knowledge…and pass it on.
