The Amazing Captain Nemo (1978) - Thursday, Aug. 7
After Navy divers discover the legendary Captain Nemo (José Ferrer) in suspended animation aboard his submarine, The Nautilus, a secret U.S. government agency seeks his help in defeating a mad scientist (Burgess Meredith). A rollicking sci-fi adventure in the spirit of Mysterious Island, from disaster movie maestro Irwin Allen. With Horst Buchholz and Lynda Day George. Author Robert Bloch (Psycho) had a hand in the script. Alex March and Paul Stader directed.
The Golden Seal (1983) - Thursday, Aug. 14
A young Torquil Campbell - today the lead singer of the acclaimed Montreal-based pop band Stars - plays the lead in this heartwarming tale of a boy and his seal. Campbell stars as Eric, a lonely 10-year-old living in Alaska's remote Aleutian Islands. Desperate for companionship, Eric befriends a seal her young pup. But the islanders believe her to be the golden seal of local legend, with a pelt worth thousands of dollars. Soon the chase is on, with only Eric standing between his new friend and the poachers bent on taking her life. Steve Railsback (The Stunt Man), Michael Beck (The Warriors) and Penelope Milford (Coming Home) also star. Based on the novel A River Ran Out of Eden by James Vance Marshall. Frank Zuniga directed.
True Heart (1997) - Thursday, Aug. 21
Kirsten Dunst (Marie Antoinette) stars in this family adventure about a teenage girl and her brother (Home Improvement's Zachery Ty Bryan) who are stranded by a plane crash in the British Columbia wilderness. The siblings are rescued by a Native Canadian named Khonanesta (August Schellenberg) and his companion, a Kodiak bear called "Grandfather," and must return the favour when Khonanesta is mistakenly implicated in a poaching ring. Michael Gross (Family Ties) and Dey Young also star. Catherine Cyran directed.
Carousel (1956) - Thursday, Aug. 28, 9 p.m. ET / 6 p.m. PT
Though it was overshadowed at the time by Oklahoma! and The King and I, Carousel is admired today as perhaps the finest adaptation of a Rodgers & Hammerstein musical to the big screen. Gordon MacRae stars as Billy Bigelow, a disreputable carny who marries a sweet-natured mill worker, played by Shirley Jones. (The pair had starred previously in Oklahoma!) Their life together is cut short by tragedy, leaving Billy just one last chance to atone for his mistakes. A haunting, unusually somber tale of loss and redemption, Carousel features many classic numbers from the Rodgers & Hammerstein song book, including "If I Loved You," "You'll Never Walk Alone" and the powerful "Soliloquy." The famed "Louise's Ballet," performed by Susan Luckey and dance legend Jacques d'Amboise, features Agnes DeMille's choreography. Gene Lockhart and Cameron Mitchell also star.
Wait Until Dark (1967) - Thursday, Aug. 28, Midnight ET / 9 p.m. PT
Even after 40 years, this claustrophobic thriller has lost none of its power to shock. Audrey Hepburn stars (in an Oscar-nominated performance) as a blind woman trapped in her apartment and menaced by a trio of ruthless thugs searching for a heroin-stuffed doll. Alan Arkin is electrifying as the criminal ringleader, a sadistic psychopath. The final 15 minutes, as Hepburn uses all her ingenuity in an effort to outwit her tormentors, is one of the most suspenseful sequences ever filmed. Richard Crenna and Efrem Zimbalist Jr. also star. Henry Mancini composed the score. Terence Young directed.
