Posted on Thursday, June 05, 2008 - 04:07 PM
Animal Planet

Lions and tigers and bears – oh my! The only channel exclusively dedicated to the relationship between humans and animals, Animal Planet unleashes the beasts – and reveals a new look – this July during a national freeview. Taking a bite out of summer with free access from July 1 to 31, 2008, Animal Planet will debut a packed slate of dynamic – and sometimes dangerous! – new series and specials throughout the freeview period.* During the July freeview period alone, Animal Planet will launch nine new series and four new specials – an ideal occasion for current and new viewers alike to sample the wilder side of the channel.

This July, Animal Planet will also debut a new look, featuring a brand-new logo, a striking new on-air campaign, and redesigned website. With an edgier look and perilous new content, this newest evolution of Animal Planet is designed to appeal to a broader audience. In July, Animal Planet will introduce “Bite Me” Wednesdays, the channel’s destination for its most aggressive jaws-and-claws programming, featuring the world’s most fierce, feral and confrontational interactions with the animal kingdom. The channel will continue to offer other themed evenings, such as Tuesday’s “Pets and Vets,” making it easy for viewers to find their favourite “breed” of animal-themed programming.

“Animal Planet is premiering many new hours of superb programming during the July freeview that will showcase the incredible diversity of the animal kingdom and all the remarkable relationships humans have with our planet’s creatures,” said Stan Lipsey, Director of Animal Planet. “We’re especially excited about the new series coming to our Wednesday night ‘Bite Me’ lineup – these series feature a rawness and visceral impact that will bring viewers to the edge of their seats.”

Thrilling new series include After the Attack (July 2), which recounts gripping stories of people who have survived deadly confrontations with wild animals and lived to tell the tale; Untamed and Uncut (July 2), which brings viewers some of the most gritty and shocking animal encounters ever caught on tape; Raw Nature (July 30), which follows filmmakers as they travel across the world to document how human development is affecting the natural instincts of some of the planet’s most dangerous animals; and Breeder of the Pack (July 29), an original Canadian production that captures the real-life drama and quirky personalities of dog breeders.

There are also a number of innovative new specials, such as My Pet Dinosaur (July 26), which imagines a world where dinosaurs live among us complete with astounding CGI; and Investigation Earth with Jeff Corwin (July 17), an eye-opening look at how humankind is impacting animal habitats in the wilderness.

Also in July, cult-hit Meerkat Manor (July 10) returns for a fourth season – kicked off by a feature-length special, Meerkat: The Story Begins (July 3). The fifth season of crowd-pleaser Big Cat Diary (July 25) is also slated to premiere during the freeview.

* Most of the country’s cable and satellite providers are participating in the national freeview – viewers should confirm access with their own provider. Viewers need have a digital set-top box from their cable or satellite company to enjoy the free access to Animal Planet programming in July.
