| Broadcast Details Revealed for UEFA EURO 2008, Live on TSN and Rogers Sportsnet |
| Posted
on Wednesday, June 04, 2008 - 08:20 PM |
TSN and Rogers Sportsnet will be the destinations this month for European soccer’s biggest event. UEFA EURO 2008®, one of the most prestigious sporting events in the world is within striking distance, and as previously announced, TSN and Rogers Sportsnet have partnered from June 7 to 29 to bring Canadians all 31 games from Austria and Switzerland, live and in High Definition. All games can be accessed live and on-demand through TSN.ca and Sportsnet.ca.
Broadcast Schedule
TSN will televise 16 matches, including the first semifinal and the final on June 29, with Sportsnet airing the remaining 15 games, including the second semifinal. Numerous matches will be made available via prime time encore broadcasts (see below for complete EURO 2008® broadcast schedule).
Leading up to the tournament, TSN and Sportsnet will produce and televise a one-hour EURO 2008® Preview Show, airing June 5 and 6, providing an in-depth overview of all 16 teams competing in the tournament and a look at the four groups. The preview show also includes features about the host cities and venues.
The two networks will also produce and televise pre- and post-shows in High Definition prior to and following the matches. In addition, TSN and Sportsnet will air a 30-minute EURO 2008® Semifinal Preview Show (June 23 and 24), as well as a 60-minute EURO 2008® Road to Gold preview show (June 28 and 29) leading up to the championship final.
Complementing TSN’s and Sportsnet’s English-language coverage of EURO 2008®, RDS and RIS Info Sports together will provide French-language coverage of all 31 games, while Rogers Omni Television will provide viewers with coverage of 22 games, including the quarter-finals, semifinals and final, in Italian, Portuguese, Cantonese, Polish and Greek.
TSN has televised the UEFA European Championship on five previous occasions – 1988 from Germany, 1992 from Sweden, 1996 from England, 2000 from Belgium and the Netherlands, and 2004 from Portugal.
Broadcast Team
Vic Rauter will anchor TSN’s pre-shows, halftime and post-shows, while Gerry Dobson will take the helm for Sportsnet’s coverage. Sportsnet’s Craig Forrest and TSN’s Dick Howard will provide analysis for both networks from a shared broadcast studio.
Game coverage will feature play-by-play commentators John Helm (Salzburg and Vienna), David Woods (Innsbruck and Klagenfurt), Tony Jones (Basel and Zurich) and Steve Banyard (Bern and Geneva).
Online
All EURO 2008® games are available live and on-demand by accessing the TSN.ca and Sportsnet.ca websites. In addition, TSN and Sportsnet have partnered on a joint EURO 2008® website, featuring live scoreboards for each and every match, highlights and analysis following each game, daily blogs and columns, team profiles and tournament history. The shared website can be accessed on TSN.ca and Sportsnet.ca.
Tournament Background
The UEFA European Championship, which is held every four years, consists of Europe’s top 16 national teams as they compete for the coveted – and newly re-designed – Henri Delaunay Trophy. The teams, including automatic host qualifiers Austria and Switzerland, are divided into four groups of four. The top two finishers in each group will advance to the quarter-finals. An elimination system will be in place for the remainder of the tournament.
This marks the first time that Austria and Poland will be participating in the tournament, while Greece returns to defend its 2004 title, when they beat hosts Portugal in the final.
The winner of EURO 2008® will represent UEFA at the 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup in South Africa.
Below is a list of teams competing in this year’s tournament:
Group A: Switzerland, Czech Republic, Portugal, Turkey
Group B: Austria, Croatia, Germany, Poland
Group C: Netherlands, Italy, Romania, France
Group D: Greece, Sweden, Spain, Russia
