Pangea Day, inspired by documentary filmmaker Jehane Noujaim, is a 4-hour celebration of films, inspirational messages and musical performances from around the globe. Great minds and talent have lent their vision as Pangea Day advisors including Goldie Hawn, JJ Abrams, Dave Stewart, Bob Geldof, Paul Simon, Meg Ryan, Forest Whitaker, Mira Nair, Cameron Diaz, Jeff Skoll, Lawrence Bender and many others. This inspirational event aims to be the world's first "global campfire" bringing together people from all over the world in a unique shared experience promoting empathy, compassion and understanding.
Approximately 24 short films have been selected from an international competition that generated more than 2, 500 submissions from over 100 countries. The films were chosen based on their ability to inspire, transform and allow us to view the world through another person's eyes. Canadian Director Zacharias Kunuk ("The Fast Runner") serves as a member of the jury.
Videos from students at the Native Education Centre, British Columbia's largest private Aboriginal College, will also be featured in the program. As a part of Pangea Day’s mission to foster
new generation of storytellers, Pangea Day worked with Nokia to give each student a free video-enabled mobile phone so these students could tell their stories on Pangea Day.
“The Native Education College is honored to have been a part of the Pangea Day initiative which showcases the world-wide expression & sharing of human values while at the same time bringing new technology to our First Nations post secondary students.” says Rasunah Marsden, Interim Academic Dean, Native Education College, “We are proud to share our identity with others and hope viewers will enjoy the contributions we have made."
The event features talks from CNN's Christiane Amanpour and Queen Noor of Jordan among others and musical performances by Bob Geldof, Dave Stewart (Eurythmics) and Iranian rock band Hypernova. The broadcast is expected to reach an international audience of millions, through a multi-media platform including television, web and mobile phones. The program will feature audiences gathered in live broadcast locations planned in Cairo, Kigali, London, Los Angeles, Mumbai, and Rio de Janeiro as well as some of the self-organized ‘Friends of Pangea Day’ events which are being in over 100 different countries, including some Citytv markets across Canada.
"The first step to world peace is to have people meet each other," says Pangea Day creator, Jehane Noujaim, "Pangea Day will provide individuals with insight into the lives of people from different cultures - which I hope will promote more understanding, and empathy around the globe."
"Participating in the live-broadcast of Pangea Day seemed like a natural fit for Citytv," says Jamie Haggarty, Executive Vice President, Television Operations, General Manager, Citytv, "Citytv provides the perfect platform for this grassroots initiative which promotes the type of diversity that we value and reflect in our programming"

About Pangea Day
Inspired by the 2006 TED Prize wish of documentary filmmaker Jehane Noujaim, Pangea Day endeavors to bring the world together and promote understanding and tolerance through film. Pangea Day is a celebration of what unites us, rather than what divides us. Movies can't change the world. But the people who watch them can. After May 10, Pangea Day organizers will facilitate community-building activities around the world by connecting inspired viewers with organizations doing groundbreaking work.
