Global’s The Guard, Da Kink in My Hair, The Best Years renewed
Posted on Friday, March 21, 2008 - 03:43 PM
Global Television Network

Global Television announced earlier this week the renewal of three Canadian Original drama series - The Guard, ‘da Kink in my Hair and The Best Years for their sophomore year.

Slated for the network’s 2008-09 broadcast schedule, the entertaining, proven performers will be gearing up for production on their respective second seasons in the coming weeks, and based on solid statistics of the first seasons, fans nationwide are ready for more.

“It takes real talent to make great stories into great television, and we have it all here within our amazing writing and production communities,” said Christine Shipton, SVP, Drama and Factual Content, Canwest Broadcasting. “Our commitment to bringing Canadian drama back to Canwest remains firm, and we couldn’t be more excited to continue our support and growth of these drama series.”

The Guard, shot in Squamish, B.C. and produced by Halifax Film and Brightlight Pictures, is a dramatic action series focusing on four compelling characters who risk their lives daily working in the Canadian Coast Guard. Audiences were immediately attracted to these west coast heroes, strongly launching with over 800,000 viewers, The Guard was the #1 new Canadian Original in the key demo Adults 18-49.

‘da Kink in my Hair, produced by Barna-Alper, trey anthony, Ngozika and Defiant Entertainment and shot in Toronto, Ontario, is a comedic drama set in a bustling hair salon in Toronto’s Caribbean community. Making the jump from stage to screen, ‘da Kink in my Hair resonated strongly with urban audiences, showing particularly strong numbers in the Toronto market - appealing to the largest percentage of Adults 18-49 in the largest urban centre amongst Canadian original comedies. ‘da Kink was the #1 new comedy of the season, topping Sophie and Jpod in Toronto by 16% and 88% respectively; even outranking new episodes of the competing network’s comedy, Corner Gas, for key demos in the market in January 2008.

The Best Years, produced by Blueprint Entertainment and shot on location in Toronto, Ontario, was created by Aaron Martin (Degrassi: The Next Generation) and follows six compelling young characters as they encounter “firsts’ at University. The Best Years struck a chord with viewers in the Summer of 2007 with increased viewership from the premiere to finale by 30% for 2+ and by 54% in the key demo Adults 18-49 nationally.
