NHL Network Says Goodbye to NHL Legends with Farewell Month
Posted on Tuesday, April 01, 2003 - 12:12 AM
NHL Network

Gordie Howe. Mario Lemieux. Wayne Gretzky. Ray Bourque. NHL Network honours these legendary NHL greats every Friday at 4 p.m. ET throughout the month of April with Farewell Month, featuring the final NHL games and All-Star Games of these four prolific players.

Farewell Month drops the puck on Friday, April 4 at 4 p.m. ET with a look back at the last NHL All-Star Game ever played by the greatest player to dominate five decades, Gordie Howe. Affectionately referred to as Mr. Hockey, Howe was a member of the Hartford Whalers when he was selected by coach Scotty Bowman to play in the 1980 All-Star Game. During the introduction ceremony, Howe was given a huge standing ovation by the Detroit fans and finally had to skate to the bench in an attempt to stop the cheering. Howe collected a goal and assist as his team won the game 6-3.

NHL Network continues Farewell Month on Friday, April 11 at 4 p.m. ET with Mario Lemieux's last game in 1997 - Game 5 of the Eastern Conference Quarter-finals against the Philadelphia Flyers. The Pittsburgh Penguins captain left the league at the top of his game: he led the NHL in scoring for the sixth time, was one of only four 50-goal scorers and topped the 100-point mark for the 10th time in 12 full seasons. After a courageous battle with Hodgkin's disease, Lemieux broke out of retirement in 2000 and returned to the NHL.

The sentimental action continues on Friday, April 18 at 4 p.m. ET with living legend Wayne Gretzky's final regular season game. Commonly referred to by hockey fans as 'The Great One', Gretzky's last game in 1999 saw the Eastern Conference rival Pittsburgh Penguins edge his New York Rangers by a score of 2-1.

NHL Network's Farewell Month comes to a close on Friday, April 25 at 4 p.m. ET with the final regular season game of legendary blueliner Ray Bourque. Bourque helped the Colorado Avalanche power past the Minnesota Wild with a 4-2 victory in his last career regular season game in 2001.
