He's a perfect gentleman, a respected member of the police force.... and a cold-blooded serial killer. He's Dexter(TM), and he's coming to CTV this February. CTV announced today that it will bring the killer hit and edgy, morally-challenging drama to Canadian viewers in another conventional television first
The 12-episode, first season of the series about loveable sociopath Dexter Morgan, played by Emmy Award nominee Michael C. Hall, will air in simulcast with CBS on Sundays at 10 p.m. ET beginning February 17 on CTV (visit CTV.ca to confirm local broadcast times). The exclusive broadcast deal with CBS Paramount International Television is the latest move by CTV to reinforce its status as the home of the hits following last week's acquisition of another big-buzz, monster success from cable, Mad Men. The two, new, one-hour dramas solidify CTV's position as Canada's conventional television destination for premium cable series.
Dexter joins one of the most robust programming schedules in North America this winter. Only CTV can deliver fresh, hit programming such as all-new Medium, Law & Order, Dance War, Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles (Jan. 13), Corner Gas (Jan. 14), Degrassi: The Next Generation (Jan. 14), American Idol (Jan. 15), The Moment of Truth (Jan. 23), Lost (Jan. 31), Eli Stone (Jan. 31), Lipstick Jungle (Feb. 7), Oprah's Big Give (March 2) and Dancing with the Stars (March 17), along with Mad Men (TBA) and Nip/Tuck (TBA).
"Dexter is a brilliant, challenging and risky series that was a must-have for CTV," said Susanne Boyce, President, Creative, Content and Channels, CTV Inc. "Not since Tony Soprano has there been an anti-hero on television that is so immensely alluring, despite his immorality. The ethical challenge to the viewer is whether they can like a character who kills in cold blood. It's a daring premise - and it works."
"We are thrilled to be able to expose Dexter to a wider audience by licensing it to CTV in Canada," commented Armando Nunez, Jr., President, CBS Paramount International Television.
Based on the novel Darkly Dreaming Dexter by Jeff Lindsay, Dexter stars Emmy and Golden Globe Award-nominated Michael C. Hall (Six Feet Under) as Dexter Morgan, a brilliant forensics expert for the Miami Metro Police Department by day - and serial killer by night. But Dexter doesn't just murder anyone - he employs a strict moral code by only dispatching those who have eluded the law. Because of Dexter's mature and explicit content, viewers will be appropriately warned in advance of each segment of the broadcast.
Dexter is the latest premium cable series to come to CTV, which has established itself as a pioneer in broadcasting controversial cable content on conventional television, following acquisitions of The Sopranos, The Osbournes and Nip/Tuck.
A winner of two technical Emmy Awards, Dexter has been honoured for two consecutive years by the American Film Institute as a Top 10 Outstanding Program (2006, 2007). The series has also been nominated in various categories for awards given out by the Writers Guild, Producers Guild, Casting Society and the Television Critics Association. The series recently completed its second season on SHOWTIME, with its second season finale last month delivering 1.4 million viewers, the largest audience ever for an original SHOWTIME broadcast.
Dexter's Michael C. Hall has been twice nominated for a Golden Globe Award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Drama Series (2007, 2008). He is the recipient of the 2007 Television Critics Association Award for Individual Achievement in Drama and also received a Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Drama Series. Hall has also won a Golden Satellite Award and a Saturn Award for Best Actor in a Drama Series.
Dexter also stars Julie Benz (Angel, Buffy the Vampire Slayer), Jennifer Carpenter (The Exorcism of Emily Rose), Erik King (National Treasure), Lauren Velez (Oz), David Zayas (Michael Clayton) and James Remar (Sex and the City). John Goldwyn, Sara Colleton and Clyde Phillips, are Executive Producers. Dexter was developed for television by James Manos, Jr.
The current season of Dexter can be seen on The Movie Network/Movie Central.
