Why Canada Fights: Afghanistan
Posted on Thursday, October 25, 2007 - 03:31 PM
i-Channel

The newspaper headlines have been full of questions lately— how did Canadian soldiers really end up in the south of Afghanistan fighting a brutal war? Have we abandoned peacekeeping as a historic pillar of our foreign policy just to please the US after we backed out of the Iraq War? How was the Afghan mission hatched? And perhaps most importantly— can the West win?

This is an issue of national importance and the real story behind the story is revealed in the investigative documentary “WHY CANADA FIGHTS: AFGHANISTAN” exclusively on ichannel.

The documentary will air on Sunday, November 4th at 9:00pm on the URC Investigates.

WHY CANADA FIGHTS: AFGHANISTAN puts this war into the context of the larger question of “failed states.” As a member of the UN, NATO and the G8, what is Canada to do about a country where our efforts at development and government stabilization are key to the security threats posed against the West?

With first-hand accounts, the documentary reveals the high level political and diplomatic maneuvering that went on to publicly support to the US “war on terror”, but avoid the entanglement of Iraq.

Canada is now part of the dangerous NATO mission in Kandahar province in southern Afghanistan, the home of the Taliban and its renewed insurgency. As the battles have grown and Canadian casualties have mounted, reports that ordinary Afghans are becoming disaffected with their increasingly corrupt government and its inability to provide security and basic services has left Canadians deeply divided about the mission.

WHY CANADA FIGHTS: AFGHANISTAN is a report card on Ottawa’s initiative to introduce the 3 D’s of diplomacy, defence and development together in a coordinated approach to the challenges of international crises in the 21st Century.
