| Discovery Channel and Space Join Forces to Offer Complementary Mars-themed Programming |
| Posted
on Thursday, August 30, 2007 - 11:38 AM |
As Discovery Channel plans to launch its most ambitious programming event ever - the multi-platform "Race to Mars" expedition miniseries and companion documentary series "Mars Rising" (premiering Sun., Sept. 23 and Oct. 7 respectively) - Discovery Channel and SPACE have collaborated to present a rocket-full of additional complementary Mars-themed programming across both services throughout September. From behind-the-scenes stories on Discovery Channel's "Daily Planet" and SPACE's "HypaSpace," to feature films and an up-to-the-minute special on the latest Mars lander mission, it's all the "right stuff" to prepare for the voyage of a lifetime.
Mars Week on "Daily Planet"
Mon., Sept. 10 to Fri., Sept. 14 at 7 p.m. ET/8 p.m. PT on Discovery Channel
From rovers to rockets, Discovery Channel's nightly flagship science magazine is seeing red with Mars Week on "Daily Planet." Each night veteran science journalist Jay Ingram and new co-host Kim Jagtiani will explore the unique challenges of sending a human mission to Mars and the latest innovations that aim to see this maiden voyage a success. Highlights this week include:
· The ATK Rocket 2 is the world's most powerful solid fuel rocket. Deep in the Utah Desert, engineers are testing this technical marvel to ensure it is safe to use for boosting astronauts to the moon and then on to Mars.
· Dr. Marion Connelly has an unusual profession: protecting Earth from Martian contamination and vice versa. See how this remarkable job plays into a Mars mission and what is being done to ensure astronauts are protected in the Martian atmosphere.
· Space scientists are chilled to the bone as they gear up in high-tech space suits and put them to the test at Devon Island's Haughton Crater in the Arctic. At 10 kilometres long, it's the furthest space walk simulation ever completed - and scientists monitor every step.
· This special theme week also goes behind-the-scenes during the production of "Race to Mars" with stories from the set and how today's science is being incorporated into the miniseries' vision of a future manned mission to Mars.
"Mars: Phoenix Odyssey"
Sun., Sept. 16 at 7 p.m. ET/8 p.m. PT on Discovery Channel
It's the mission that could redefine life as we know it: a treasure hunt to the polar regions of Mars to discover water, the origin of all life. Peter Smith is a university professor who has convinced NASA to give him US$350 million to build a space ship, pack it full of instruments, buy a rocket and head off to Mars. But Smith faces an uphill battle with a limited budget that has forced him to be creative in ways never before seen in space science. Using parts and plans from the 10-year-old Mars Polar Lander, the Phoenix rises from the ashes only to be faced with a bevy of technical problems. TEGA - the main instrument designed to sniff out signs of life - has quit working, a radar system is broken, and the entire mission hangs in the balance. If the Phoenix lander cannot make it to the launch pad in time for its date with Mars, this first quest for water - and life - on Mars will end before it even gets off the ground.
