Canada’s Xenophile Media nets Primetime Emmy® nomination for the Fallen Alternate Reality Game

General TV News

Xenophile Media, an internationally-acclaimed Canadian producer of award-winning interactive content for television, has received an Emmy® nomination in association with ABC Family and Matt Wolf for its production of the Fallen Alternate Reality Game.

The Fallen Alternate Reality Game was designed and created by Toronto-based Xenophile Media, and Los Angeles-based Executive Producer Matt Wolf of Double Twenty Productions as an interactive tie-in for the ABC Family television movie Fallen, which premiered in July, 2006. Since then, a total of 2.8 million people visited the website and more than 250,000 people from around the world played the game.

Xenophile Media co-founder Thomas Wallner, described being a finalist at the 59th Primetime Emmy® Awards a tribute to everyone at Xenophile Media.

“We are extremely proud of the work we are doing at Xenophile and this Emmy nomination speaks to the creativity and dedication of an extremely talented group of people,” said Wallner. “With the Fallen Alternate Reality game we broke new creative ground and we are happy that our efforts in the exciting genre of alternate reality games continue to be well received both by the public and the entertainment industry. It is an exciting time for us and we think the best is yet to come as TV viewers increasingly discover the thrill of becoming active participants in the programs they are tuning in to.”

“It was a great opportunity for the Xenophile Media team to collaborate with ABC Family on this remarkable project,” said Xenophile Media co-founder Patrick Crowe. “We have had an amazing year. After winning an International Emmy® earlier this year for the ReGenesis Extended Reality Game and now to get news that we have been nominated for a Primetime Emmy – validates Xenophile Media as an international industry-leader in cross-platform production.”

Co-founders Crowe and Wallner are award-winning filmmakers with a legacy of creating compelling stories for television and online media. The Fallen Alternate Reality Game, earlier this year was named a winner at the Tenth Annual SXSW Interactive Awards in Austin, Texas and at the Banff World TV Festival Awards. Xenophile Media’s ReGenesis Extended Reality Game was also honoured for Excellence in Cross Platform for the second year in a row at the Canadian New Media Awards in May after winning a Gemini Award and a Banff World TV Festival Award last year.

The Fallen Alternate Reality Game (also known as “The Ocular Effect”) began with a mysterious puzzle ball known as the Oculus (www.oculareffect.com) that appeared online weeks prior to the July 2006 broadcast premiere of the television movie Fallen. Unlocking the Oculus reveals the story of a young girl named Faith Arella who undertakes a journey in search of her origins. Shot on location around the world, Faith travels from her home in Seattle to California, Florida, Australia, India and Turkey, all the while guided by an online audience of players participating in an international scavenger hunt for clues.

By using complex Flash content, multiple fictional websites, live events and on-location video, the game followed the characters on their quest, taking players on a virtual journey filled with collaborative puzzles, challenges, as well as online and off-line tasks. With new video, 360º panoramic photographs and hints released on the main character’s blog, the Fallen Alternate Reality Game created a whole new experience for Fallen fans, while the online community exploded with activity.

“With Fallen set to resurface again in 2007, the Fallen Alternate Reality Game has created a bridge for fans between seasons and an appetite for immersive entertainment,” said Crowe. “Viewers want to be engaged and have access to layers of involvement with their entertainment. Television used to be about linear story-telling, but at Xenophile Media, we like to think that we are helping to change the rules.”
