The Canadian Film and Television Production Association (CFTPA) applauds the actions taken by Minister Oda and the CRTC to ensure that all cable companies adhere to regulations on contributions to the Canadian Television Fund (CTF).
The CFTPA is extremely pleased with the leadership shown by Minister Oda in writing to the Cable companies demanding that all Canadian broadcasters fulfill their regulatory requirements. Also to be commended is the CRTC's initiative which recognizes the importance of the CTF as being fundamental to the Production of Canadian programming by insisting that Shaw and Vidéotron resume a monthly payment schedule to the CTF.
"This is an incredibly important signal and we very much appreciate Mr. Von Finckenstein's willingness to move expeditiously to amend the regulations to explicitly specify adherence to the traditional monthly payments schedule," said Guy Mayson, President and CEO, CFTPA, "The CFTPA has been insisting that both the Minister and the CRTC take action to address this crisis and we couldn't be more pleased that we have been heard, action has been taken, and that the cable companies have been reigned in."
"The Commission's recognition of the importance of independent production along with its commitment to reducing the uncertainty surrounding our sector is critical to solidify independent production at the heart of the broadcasting system," said Ira Levy, Chair, Board of Directors, CFTPA.
The CFTPA looks forward to continuing to work collaboratively with the Commission and all stakeholders to continue to build a stronger Industry while at the same time achieving the cultural objectives of the Broadcasting Act.
The CFTPA is a non-profit trade organization that works on behalf of almost 400 companies engaged in the production and distribution of English-language television programs, feature films, and interactive media products in all regions of Canada, including Quebec.
