·Daily Planet
Tues., Feb. 20 at 7 p.m. ET/8 p.m. PT (on Discovery Channel)
The first of two special China-themed episodes, today Daily Planet looks at Beijing's National Olympic Stadium and the National Swimming Centre, new designs destined to be the architectural yin and yang of the 2008 Olympic site. Then, it's time for a royal tour as Natasha Stillwell and Jay Ingram check out China's Summer Palace and meet the engineers who are taking a decidedly antiquated approach to restoring the palace to its former glory. From the Summer Palace to space, check in with the Shenzhou 6 mission and the exhaustive training the astronauts underwent for that mission. Other highlights in this special episode include: how monitoring stations can predict hazardous sandstorms; check out how panda experts are increasing the endangered population with a little passion; discover the remarkable ancient Bronze Chimes of Marquis Yi that can play two distinct notes - but how?; and see how rescue robots can snake through earthquake and crash site disasters.
·Daily Planet
Wed., Feb. 21 at 7 p.m. ET/8 p.m. PT (on Discovery Channel)
In this week's second China-themed special episode, see how Shanghai rivals Venice as a sinking metropolis and what scientists are trying to do to keep the city's skyscrapers upright. While in Shanghai, see how the city is making way for the future with an elegant and eclectic approach to new architecture. See how new science is shedding light on the past: a new study theorizes that Peking Man (and not Lucy) seems to represent the origin of the modern Chinese population and see how bronze bells are made using ancient methods. Also in this episode: meet scientists endeavoring to control the weather to alleviate drought; track a real wild thing and join the hunt for the Yeren, China's Bigfoot; and explore the athletic art of Chinese acrobats.
