Hold On Tight! Dakar Rally Returns to OLN on Feb. 4 with 8,708 km of White-Knuckle, Off-Road Action

Outdoor Life Network

It is the ultimate test of endurance and navigational ability. This year, OLN will broadcast Dakar Rally - the awesome 16-day international trek - on Sun., Feb. 4 from 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT-11 p.m. ET/8 p.m. PT. Now in its 29th year, this incredible all-wheel off road competition - including motorcycles, cars and trucks - will take the contestants 8,708 km through Portugal, Spain, Morocco, Mauritania, Mali, and Guinea ending in Dakar, Senegal, on the banks of Lac Rose.

The Dakar Rally is considered by drivers and enthusiasts alike to be the most difficult of all off-road rallies. More than a simple speed race, the Dakar demands physical fitness, immense tenacity and top notch navigation skills. The interplay between physical and technical performances throughout the desert terrain has seduced champions from different horizons for close to thirty years.

This year the race will kick off for the second time in Lisbon, Portugal. From Portugal to Senegal watch as 525 teams, including 250 motorcycles, 187 cars and 88 trucks traverse lethal desert conditions in their quest to conquer the Dakar Rally. This year, 38 per cent of motorcyclists and 10 per cent of auto participants are first time competitors.

Making the journey even more difficult, GPS functions are deliberately reduced, forcing drivers and co-drivers to navigate exclusively on information provided in their road book. Also, several measures, including fixing a speed limit (160 km per hour) for bikes have been adopted in order to improve safety conditions for competitors and local populations.
