Can you imagine a world without Star Trek? Who knew that a new Gene Roddenberry series about space exploration would change the face of science fiction forever? 40 Years of Star Trek, a SPACE original production premiering September 23 at 7pm ET / 4pm PT, honours a show that created a dynasty which has become a worldwide phenomenon and a cultural icon.

Hosted by SPACE on-air personality Jonathan Llyr, the one-hour special takes a look at the legacy of the original series, some of the lives it has influenced and the huge fan following that has made it so successful. The show features interviews with cast members William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, Nichelle Nichols, George Takei and Walter
Koenig; as well as writers from the original series including D.C. Fontana, Harlan Ellison and George Clayton Johnson.

Star Trek: The Original Series debuted on September 8, 1966 on NBC. After its three year stint, the series began running in syndication, attracting new fans and appealing to a broader audience. The show inspired six feature films, an animated series and four additional spin-off television shows. Other offshoots include novels, comic books, merchandise and fan-fiction based on the series. Despite its short network run, Star Trek: The Original Series has become one of the most successful shows in television history.
