Superman’s Christopher Reeve to show up in “Smallville”

It will be the first time in over fifteen years that Christopher Reeve will appear in a Superman-related series when his ‘Smallville’ guest stint airs during February sweeps on CHUM-owned stations and the WB.

Reeve will play a rich scientist who has been funding research about the planet of Krypton. Because of Reeve’s character, Clark Kent (Tom Welling) learns some information about where he came from that will change his life forever.

Reeve first made a name for himself by acting in the I through IV Superman movies from 1978 to 1987. Today, Reeve is known for his support of paralysis research, following a horseback-riding accident which left him unable to walk.

“When Al and I created ‘Smallville,’ the first Superman film was our touchstone,” said Executive Producer Miles Millar, in a recent statement released by the WB. “Chris not only made us believe a man could fly, but he gave humanity to a superhero. We are tremendously honoured to have him become part of ‘Smallville’s’ mythology.”

“Smallville” first became a hit with Canadians when it made it debut on Global last year. This season, CHUM was able to ‘steal’ the show away from Global.

Debbie Millette, Citytv Vancouver Programming Manager, recently explained how that happened: “Negotiating for the big primetime shows is a thrilling and stressful experience. It's a huge, crazy auction; and the highest bidder usually wins. But often, while our prices may not be quite where the distributors want them, we can offer other things - like fabulous promotion or the right home for the show… Ours is a better fit for the show and the WB wanted the show to work.”

When and where to watch Smallville:

Tuesdays 8pm ET/PT -- Citytv
Tuesdays 9pm ET/PT -- the WB
Tuesdays 10pm -- WFFF-TV (Fox 44) in parts of Quebec
