Discovery Channel Canada announced today that its two-hour Canadian-produced special How William Shatner Changed the World was nominated this morning for two Emmy® Awards in the categories of "Outstanding Nonfiction Special" and "Outstanding Writing For Nonfiction Programming." These are Discovery Channel Canada's first ever Emmy® nominations.
The Academy of Television Arts and Sciences present the 58th Primetime Emmy® Awards - television's highest accolades - on Sun., Aug. 27 in Los Angeles. The broadcast can be seen in Canada on CTV.
Commissioned by Discovery Channel Canada, How William Shatner Changed the World was produced by Montreal's Handel Productions in association with Mentorn in the U.K., and directed by Julian Jones. Alan Handel and Julian Jones are also nominated for writing credits. Cheeky and irreverent, How William Shatner Changed the World boldly goes where few have gone before to reveal how scientists are surpassing the far-out vision of the future foreshadowed in Star Trek. From cell phones to computers and even leading-edge medical advancements, the two-hour special explores how the sci-fi inventions featured in the original Star Trek series have permeated everyday life as we know it.
Presented in high definition, How William Shatner Changed the World enjoyed its World Premiere Broadcast on Discovery Channel Canada on November 13, 2005, ranking as Discovery's top-rated special for Fall 2005 (Nielsen Media Advisor). Since then, the international production and broadcast partners, including The History Channel in the U.S., ARTE in France, Channel 5 in the U.K. and Discovery Communications International have also aired the special to great audience acclaim.
Before playing Denny Crain and T.J. Hooker, Montreal-born Shatner made his mark when Captain Kirk and the USS Enterprise catapulted into space - and living rooms everywhere - with the debut of Star Trek in September 1966. But little did he know what effect the series would have on a generation of inventors and scientists, who, inspired by Star Trek, would revolutionize medicine, space exploration and consumer technology. Hosted and narrated by Shatner and based on his book, I'm Working On That, How William Shatner Changed the World meets the brightest minds of Silicon Valley and their Trek-inspired inventions that have changed the world. Shatner is also nominated for an Emmy® in the "Outstanding Supporting Actor In A Drama Series" for his portrayal of lawyer Denny Crane in Boston Legal.
Leading up to the Emmy Awards®, Discovery Channel will present an encore broadcast of How William Shatner Changed the World on Wed., Aug. 23 at 8 p.m. ET/10 p.m. PT.
