The Comedy Network announced earlier this month the debut of seven new series and the return of popular, multi-award-winning programs and specials for the 2006/2007 Season.
Kicking off the ninth season of yuks are the premieres of three new Canadian series: Punched Up, satirizing makeover programs and reality TV; Celebrity Deathmatch and Keys to the VIP (working title). In addition, The Comedy Network presents four new imports: Mind of Mencia, Comedy Central's highest-rated new series, acclaimed for its honesty and brashness; So NoTORIous; Rose D’Or nominee Suburban Shootout, the U.K.’s not-so-subtle blend of Desperate Housewives and Kill Bill; and Team Sanchez.
The Network’s solid line-up of Canadian programming continues in 2006/2007 with new seasons from its award-winning, original productions: Corner Gas (our No. 1 Canadian series), Robson Arms, Odd Job Jack, Comedy Inc. and Comedy Now (celebrating its 10th anniversary season). Returning for a second season of laughs are Jeff Ltd., starring Gemini Award-winning actor Jeff Seymour; You Bet Your Ass, a hybrid game show combining trivia with high stakes betting; and the 2nd Annual Yuk Yuk's Great Canadian Laugh Off.
2006/2007 promises all-new hit seasons from a variety of returning imports including The Daily Show with Jon Stewart (our highest-rated series), The Colbert Report (a bona fide breakout hit ranking a close second behind The Daily Show), South Park (celebrating its tenth anniversary season), The Simpsons, Reno 911! and King of The Hill.
The Comedy Network’s 2006/2007 Season includes:
New Original Series
Punched Up
A crack team of comedy writers become modern day Cyrano de Bergeracs in Punched Up, a new half-hour series satirizing makeover programs and reality TV. Punched Up takes the average Canadian Joe or Jane and perks up their lives with an infusion of laughter. In each episode, four comedians follow folks at home, work and play, to observe, probe, comment on and coach them through their lives. From the producer of Loving Spoonfuls, Punched Up airs exclusively on The Comedy Network.
Keys to the VIP
What’s the one thing that men around the world have in common? What binds them in their manhood? The answer is simple…the pursuit of women. Since the dawn of mankind, men all over the world have developed techniques, tactics, rules, and strategies to help them attract the opposite sex. In today’s society, the successful application of these strategies is referred to as “game”. Keys to the VIP (working title) is a new, original, 13-part, half-hour series about having “game.” Each episode of this testosterone-fuelled series showcases the “skills” of two young studs as they compete against each other in various pick-up challenges of increasing difficulty, in an attempt to demonstrate their superior seductive prowess in the real-life battlefield of bars and nightclubs. From the producer of Rich Bride Poor Bride, Keys to the VIP airs exclusively on The Comedy Network.
Celebrity Deathmatch

Reserve your ringside seats for the ultimate in satire with the debut of Celebrity Deathmatch, a new Comedy Network/MTV co-production. Celebrity Deathmatch is an eight-part series of no-holds-barred, fantasy boxing bouts featuring stop-motion clay animation of today’s hottest celebrities pitted against each other in the ring. This original, new series parodies the worlds of film, television, music, sports and politics and includes one-on-one interviews, press conferences and behind-the-scenes locker room moments. Featured celebrity matches include Pamela Anderson vs Tommy Lee, Chris Rock vs The Rock, Ryan Seacrest vs Simon Cowell, Chris Martin vs Bono and Shaq vs Kobe, among others.
New Acquisitions:
Mind of Mencia

Speaking his mind one episode at a time, cultural spitfire Carlos Mencia takes on everyone from every background with his no-holds-barred, razor-sharp humour in Mind of Mencia. Shot in studio and on location, this 12-part, half-hour series from Comedy Central is based on Mencia's unique point of view on the world including topics such as ethnic stereotypes, race relations, immigration, war, patriotism, capitalism and family. The show includes Mencia's comments on pop culture and current events, man-on-the-street interviews, commercial parodies, as well as interaction with the studio audience.
So NoTORIous

So NoTORIous Season 1 - Tori Spelling
Being a young single woman trying to navigate career, romance and family is hard; being a young single Tori Spelling trying to do all this adds a whole extra layer of freakishness. Yes, she's moved out of the mansion, but into a high-rise condo that she rents from her mother, and her next-door neighbor is Farrah Fawcett. Tori rarely has a date that doesn't end with them giving her their headshot and resume or asking for a sizeable loan. The only offers that are coming in are for increasingly melodramatic cable TV movies for the Female Channel, the poor man's Lifetime. Her attempts to communicate with her imperious mother Kiki (played by Loni Anderson) are usually interrupted by an auction in her eBay room or a crisis in the Silver Room, and her impossibly busy father is only reachable via speakerphone. Inspired by real events and people in her life, Spelling stars as a fictionalized version of herself in the 10-episode, half-hour scripted comedy So NoTORIous.
Suburban Shootout
In Little Stemplington, the women don’t kill time – they kill each other with anything from 9mm Glock machine guns to potato peelers if necessary. Beneath the charity fundraising and mid-morning aerobic classes lies a secret, super-sexed, super-violent world where industrial strength viagra is shaved into husbands' suppers with fresh parmesan, and high doses of HRT are smuggled in from the continent. When new resident Joyce Hazledine moves into a sleepy English town, she gets more than she bargains for and quickly gets embroiled in a turf war between two power-crazy suburban housewives, Camilla Diamond and Barbara Du Prez. U.K. import and recent Rose D’Or nominee Suburban Shootout stars Anna Chancellor (Four Weddings and a Funeral), Felicity Montagu (I'm Alan Partridge), Amelia Bullmore (Coronation Street) and Ralph Inenson (The Office). Think Desperate Housewives meets Kill Bill - only without the suntans or the samurais.
Team Sanchez
Team Sanchez documents the amazing real-life story of three Welsh lads (Matthew Pritchard, Lee Dainton, Michael "Pancho" Locke) and one warped Londoner (Dan Joyce) who came together through a mutual love of skateboarding. Now, their juvenile behavior and utter disregard for personal safety leads the boys to continually top themselves in an ongoing pursuit of twisted humour in this half-hour unscripted series from MTV (UK).
Returning Original Series:
You Bet Your Ass
Contestants put their “ass on the line” for a second season of laughs in You Bet Your Ass, a game show combining the unpredictability of casino black jack with hilarious pop-culture trivia. Hosted by Stewart Francis and Sitara Hewitt, 52 all-new episodes will air Monday through Thursday, exclusively on The Comedy Network.
Odd Job Jack
Resident ‘slacker’ Jack Ryder (Don McKellar) returns for 13 more episodes of on-the-job laughs in Season 5 of Odd Job Jack. Airing exclusively on The Comedy Network, the award-winning, animated series with an interactive edge recently picked up a Banff Rockie nomination for “Best Interactive”.
