ESPN Classic celebrates its five-year anniversary on September 7, 2006, as Canada’s only 24-hour sports network dedicated exclusively to revisiting the most memorable moments in sports history.
In the past five years, ESPN Classic has taken fans back in time to relive the greatest triumphs, comebacks, upsets, milestones, streaks, records and dynasties in the world of sports. And this year’s fall lineup is no exception.
In honour of its fifth anniversary, ESPN Classic dedicates the entire month of September to the best and most celebrated athletes to have dominated their sport. The cream of the crop include ‘The Greatest of all Time’ Muhammad Ali, five-time NBA MVP Michael Jordan, ‘The Great One’ Wayne Gretzky, legendary NFL quarterback Joe Montana, and the finest soccer player of his time, Pele.
ESPN Classic’s broadcast schedule is designed to coincide with the biggest events on the sports calendar. Leading up to major sports events, viewers will see specialized theme weeks and weekends showcasing classic moments from that event’s storied history.
ESPN Classic’s theme week and weekend broadcast schedule for 2006/07 is as follows:
Canadian Open Tennis Weekends (August 5/6; August 12/13)
Leading into the men’s Rogers Cup in Toronto and women’s Rogers Cup in Montreal, ESPN Classic features 16 hours of classic Canadian Open tennis. Highlights include some of the greatest action ever to take place on Canadian soil, with matches featuring tennis stars Andre Agassi, Pete Sampras, Monica Seles and Gabriela Sabatini to name a few.
U.S. Open Tennis Weekend (August 26/27)
The USTA National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, NY is the setting for some of the most exciting U.S. Open tennis matches in history. ESPN Classic has vintage action from the final Grand Slam event on the tennis calendar with coverage of the top tennis players of all time, including Jimmy Connors, Steffi Graf, Andre Agassi, Pete Sampras and Martina Navratilova.
Fall Classic Weekends (October 7/8; October 14/15)
With the World Series just around the corner, ESPN Classic salutes the heroes of the diamond with classic games from the MLB post-season. From the Toronto Blue Jays to the now defunct Montreal Expos, ESPN Classic has all the bases covered with vintage League Championship and World Series games.
Grey Cup Weekend (November 17/18)
A national tradition for almost 100 years, the Grey Cup has provided its share of highlight reel moments. Leading up to this year’s Canadian football championship, ESPN Classic pays tribute to the greatest heroes, memories and pigskin pinnacles in Grey Cup history, featuring games with the recently retired Doug Flutie, current Argos coach Pinball Clemons, and TSN analyst Matt Dunigan.
World Junior Hockey Holiday Celebration (December 24/25)
ESPN Classic spreads holiday cheer with two full days of unforgettable World Junior Hockey Championship action on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Leading into TSN’s annual holiday tradition, fans can revisit the greatest games from this international hockey tournament featuring numerous present-day NHLers such as Jarome Iginla, Jose Theodore and Paul Kariya.
Super Bowl Week (January 2007)

Coverage includes Eric Lindros’ first game in Philadelphia after demanding a trade to the New York Rangers, Tracy McGrady’s return to Toronto after signing with the Magic as a free agent, and Wayne Gretzky’s first game back in Edmonton after arguably the biggest trade in NHL history.
