The Comedy Network announced today that it is seeking residents from the Greater Toronto Area and beyond, from all walks of life, looking to perk up their lives with an infusion of laughter for a new series called Punched Up, premiering this fall. For four days, a crack team of comedians will be at the beck and call of ordinary residents.
The team will follow them at home, at work and at play, to observe, probe, comment on and coach them through their lives.
Among the people who might be leading candidates for 'punch up' services from the show:
- Actors, singers, comedians or TV hosts, with delivery that needs a little fine-tuning...
- Professors, lecturers, or young urban professionals, with presentations that are old and tired...
- Baristas or bartenders needing help with over-the-counter chitchat...
- A parking attendant or meter maid looking to defuse hostile confrontations...
- A businessman whose schtick needs a tune-up in order to boost sales...
- A stripper willing to get 'punched up' if it means better tips...
- A doctor, looking to improve their bedside manner...
- People who are unemployed and looking for work with an approach that leaves much to be desired...
- The last one invited out every Saturday night because they're not the life of the party...
- People single and looking for love, because they don't know any good pickup lines...
- Someone considering proposing to their mate but who just can't find the right words...
"It's better living through better writing," said series creator Allan Novak.
Interested members of the public, who are 18 years of age or older and ready to make a change and find the funny, are invited to attend an Open Call on Sunday, May 28 from 9 a.m. until noon at The Second City, 51 Mercer Street.
Additional details are available on the general information line 416-929-7447. Those who can't attend may apply on-line at www.thecomedynetwork.ca/punchedup on or before July 28, 2006. Participants must be prepared to describe why they are the ideal candidate and outline the areas of their life that need 'punching up.' Areas may include love life, job, school, family, home life, or friendships.
Punched Up is a 13-episode mockumentary series satirizing makeover programs and reality TV. The series features a crack team of comedy writers who take the average Joe or Jane and make their lives better, or at least funnier.
Punched Up is produced by Indivisual Productions in association with The Comedy Network.
Allan Novak is the Executive Producer and Founder of Indivisual Productions, a boutique production company specializing in innovative comedy, documentary, reality and lifestyle programming. Credits include the Gemini-nominated, critically acclaimed Comedy Network special, The Joe Blow Show, the 90-minute special The Joke's on Us: 50 Years of CBC Satire earning Novak a Gemini nomination for best director, and W Network lifestyle series Second Time Around and Loving Spoonfuls, the latter airing in Canada, Finland, Italy, Israel and the U.K. and currently re-airing on CBC.
