Country music, unlike many other genres of music, captures the soul of rural communities with lyrics penned to share the emotional experiences of those dealing with forbidden love, sin, and life in prison. One country artist whose own tumultuous life greatly influenced his catalogue of music is Johnny Cash. His life story takes centre stage in The Unauthorized Biography of Johnny Cash, airing on Bravo!
The incredible life and career of the “Man in Black,” and his journey plagued with personal problems including the tragic death of his idol and older brother Jack, an incident for which Johnny felt responsible for many years, are explored in this in-depth documentary.

Johnny Cash
Kris Kristofferson has referred to Johnny Cash as a “walking contradiction, partly truth and partly fiction” after Cash did things such as performing for the American troops even though he protested the Vietnam War. Cash himself told Rolling Stone Magazine, "I believe what I say, but that don't necessarily make me right. There's nothing hypocritical about it. There is a spiritual side to me that goes real deep, but I confess right up front that I'm the biggest sinner of them all." Johnny Cash experienced both failure and success in his life – from battling drug addiction to winning 11 Grammys, and getting inducted into both the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Country Music Hall of Fame. It took the love a of a good woman, second wife June Carter Cash, encouraging words from a local sheriff, and a new found interest in religion to help him escape from the cloud of destruction created by years of drug abuse.
The journey of this American music icon is captured in this documentary with exclusive photos and archival footage depicting his humble beginnings picking cotton in Dyess, Arkansas, his two marriages, his rivalry with Elvis Presley, and his famous performances at San Quentin prison and for President Richard Nixon at the White House. The documentary also details Cash’s time in the air force as a radio intercept operator, his erratic behaviour fuelled by drug abuse, and his suicide attempt in 1967. Johnny’s younger brother Tommy and drummer W.S. Holland also provide insight and intimate stories about his life. The story of Johnny Cash’s life is set to music and unveiled in many of his albums including Bitter Tears, I Walk the Line, Ring of Fire and the posthumously issued box set, Unearthed.
