What is the greatest threat we face? Nuclear war, terrorist attack, biological warfare - or something even more devastating, unpredictable and entirely out of our hands: a cataclysmic “supervolcano” with the power to kill one billion people worldwide and trigger a volcanic winter, dropping the Earth’s temperature by more than 12 degrees? On Sun., April 9 at 9 p.m. ET/PT, Discovery HD presents Supervolcano, a two-hour reality-based thriller that merges documentary with drama to create a stunning picture of a potential volcanic disaster.
After premiering to strong audiences on Discovery Channel in standard definition last year, witness the astonishing virtual devastation in vivid High Definition on Discovery HD as Supervolcano explores the scientific, political, economic and social impact of such a cataclysmic event.

From build-up to climax to a post-apocalyptic world, this docudrama paints a chilling picture of a natural disaster that surpasses human preparedness. Local news feeds, diary footage, closed circuit TV, family camcorder and real archive footage are simulated in gritty High Definition detail, while human drama overlays the factual scenario.
Supervolcano follows the Yellowstone scientific team, led by Professor Rick Lieberman (Michael Riley, This Is Wonderland), as they monitor the supervolcano lying beneath the national park. When a massive earthquake shakes the park, reporter Maggie Chin (Jane McLean, Terminal City) suggests that an eruption is imminent. Lieberman and his team go on the defensive - but in truth, they have no idea what’s happening in the volcano’s massive magma chamber beneath the park. Alarming events unfold in quick succession and it’s no longer a question of “if” but “when” - and the team must predict whether it will be a regular-sized blast or a super-eruption. When Chin gets hold of the story and leaks it to the national press, the American public panics. Lieberman is ordered by Washington officials to downplay the threat, but as he goes on television to try to allay his country’s fears, the Yellowstone volcano erupts.

With hundreds of thousands of people in immediate danger, Wendy Reiss (Rebecca Jenkins, Black Harbour), head of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) in Washington, must warn American civilians that this eruption could last for three days or longer. As Lieberman flies home from Washington, his colleagues are trapped close to the volcano. Seeking refuge in an underground military bunker, Lieberman manages to communicate with FEMA in Washington - and they confirm the worst. As the days unfold, Lieberman and FEMA attempt to deal with the catastrophe and the terrible burden of how to rescue 25 million people caught beneath the ash fall. As the eruption finally sputters to an end and the global devastation is revealed, the surviving characters bravely face their new post-apocalyptic world.
Supervolcano is a Discovery Channel/BBC/ProSieben/Mediaset/NHK co-production. Series Producer, Alisa Orr and Executive Producer, Michael Mosley were the creative team behind Discovery Channel/BBC’s docudrama Pompeii: The Last Day.
