Life Network Looks at Everything “Baby”

From debates over fertility treatments to the boom in celebrity moms, baby talk is everywhere. For an intimate look into the journey of becoming a parent, Life Network is devoting an entire day of programming to the joys and struggles of having a baby. On Sunday, March 5, the Great Expectations marathon begins at 12 p.m. ET/9 a.m. PT.

“Conceiving a child is truly a struggle for some couples, and many are prepared to go to just about any length to make it happen,” says Vanessa Case, Vice President of Content, Life Network. “Baby Lab is a compelling look at couples desperately trying to conceive while Birth Days and The Baby Whisperer take over where conception leaves off – looking at the emotional highs and lows of life with baby once they’re brought home.”

Great Expectations programming includes:

Baby Lab (Network Premiere)
Sun., March 5 at 12 p.m. ET
Couples with acute fertility problems place their hope in Dr. Sherman Silber, an expert in the field. While there are no guarantees, Dr. Silber's "Baby Lab" may be their last chance at parenthood.

Baby Lab: Part One
Heike and Paul are desperate to have children of their own, but their first attempt at in vitro fertilization failed and at 41, time is running out. For Janet and David, their recent marriage was a new start and they want to have a child to complete their family, despite a recent miscarriage. Becky and Greg want a child, but Greg will need to undergo an operation on his testicles due to a low sperm count. Finally, Cara and Brandon seek Dr. Silber's help when Brandon's vasectomy reversal stops working.

Baby Lab: Part Two
Kim and Jim have been trying to have a baby ever since they first married, but their second attempt at in vitro fertilization has failed. Gina and Keith have been trying in vain to conceive and turn to in vitro fertilization, while Dr. Silber investigates why Gina’s identical twin has no problem getting pregnant naturally. Young couple Carrie and Ben are trying to overcome Ben's low sperm count and have children, while Ches and Mark are another young couple with a tough challenge. Mark has been told that he will never be able to father his own children, but Dr. Silber has his own opinion and offers Mark another chance with a special operation.

Embryo Adoption (Network Premiere)
Sun., March 5 at 2 p.m. ET (Encore Presentation at 9 p.m. ET)
There are an estimated 200,000 frozen embryos in fertility clinics across the U.S. and thousands more in Canada - "leftovers" or "by-products" from in vitro fertilization. About 90 per cent of these will remain frozen indefinitely, with couples paying a yearly storage fee. There are alternatives: anonymous donation to fertility clinics, designating them for medical research or destroying them. But there may be a fourth alternative in Canada - embryo adoption. This one-hour documentary explores the controversial issue of embryo adoption.

Birth Days (Encore Presentations)
Sun., March 5 at 3 p.m. ET
Birth Days follows the emotional whirlwind of becoming a parent. From prenatal, through delivery to those first partum weeks.

Birth Days: Paula and Leo
Paula and Leo are a carefree pair, convinced that parenthood will not pose a threat to the lifestyle they’ve established. But the minute baby daughter Lola is born, the couple head into an unknown and difficult world where their lives, and relationship, are tested. The new parents are besieged by Paula’s baby blues and difficulty nursing, sleep deprivation, lack of freedom, overzealous grandparents, and an endless stream of visitors. Can they survive life in the baby zone and accept that carefree couple time is a thing of the past?

Birth Days: Casey and Neville
Barely out of their teens, young dancers Neville and Casey pay a heavy price for falling in love when soon after beginning their relationship, Casey discovers she is pregnant. Exhausted and emotionally drained, the couple finds it hard to cope with their new life with baby Aslan. And with competing grandparents, Life’s not getting any easier for the young couple. Can their young relationship weather the pressure?

The Baby Whisperer (Network Premiere)
Sun., March 5 at 4 p.m. ET
To the untrained eye, a cry, gurgle or movement might just seem like normal baby behaviour, but to Tracy Hogg it is a language that she can understand. Her ability to pick up on exactly what is troubling infants has helped numerous families overcome seemingly impossible problems.
