Alliance Atlantis Celebrates St. Patrick’s Day

Alliance-Atlantis

Legend has it that leprechauns are protectors of fairy treasure, four leaf clovers will bring you luck and Alliance Atlantis has a golden line-up of programming this St. Patrick’s Day. Well, we can prove at least one of these legends is true! This March, tune in for documentaries that highlight the positive and negative aspects of drinking one too many, and movies featuring everything from disgruntled IRA soldiers seeking revenge to an impoverished mother of seven children whose dream is to attend a Tom Jones concert. On Friday, March 17, Alliance Atlantis has something for everyone on Discovery Health Channel, Showcase Action and IFC.

DISCOVERY HEALTH CHANNEL

Raise a glass to St. Paddy’s Day and tune into Discovery Health Channel on Friday, March 17, for one program that will get viewers in the party mood and another that may have them thinking twice about celebrating too much!

To begin the festivities, Discovery Health Channel features an encore presentation of The Making of a Hangover at 2 p.m. ET. Ever wondered what happens to your body when you consume too much alcohol? Seven volunteers are monitored during a night of drinking by scientists who use state of the art computer graphics to reveal where alcohol goes in the body and what happens in the liver, heart, stomach, and brain when consuming alcohol.

Following The Making of a Hangover comes the encore presentation of Thirst for Life at 3 p.m. ET. This one-hour special is a fun, fast-paced journey into the heart of a health mystery known as the French Paradox. What is it that allows the French to thrive despite their high consumption of alcohol and fatty foods? Is the answer in a glass of red wine? Canadian food personality and wine enthusiast Bob Blumer travels from the veggie gardens of California to the research labs of British Columbia and on to the vineyards of Bordeaux to discover the answer.

SHOWCASE ACTION

Tie one on -- it’s a St. Patrick’s Day double-shot on Showcase Action! The evening begins with The Devil’s Own at 9 p.m. ET, starring Brad Pitt as Frankie McGuire, an Irish immigrant who witnessed his father being killed by enemy soldiers when he was eight years old. Determined to exact revenge upon his father’s killers, McGuire joins the Irish Republican Army and moves to New York, where he intends to buy missiles from an arms dealer. A judge, sympathetic to the IRA’s cause, arranges for McGuire to live with Tom O’Meara (Harrison Ford), a cop with an internal struggle of his own.

As the clock ticks down to 11 p.m. ET, Tommy Lee Jones and Jeff Bridges star in Blown Away, the story of a bomb technician named Ryan Gaerity (Jones) who has escaped from a holding cell in Northern Ireland in hopes of exacting revenge upon Jimmy Dove (Bridges), his former student who disagreed with his violent ways.

IFC

Join IFC for the St. Patrick’s Day Double-Bill for two back-to-back movies set in – where else – Ireland!

In Agnes Browne, airing at 7 p.m. ET Anjelica Huston stars as the title character, a mother of seven children, ages 2-14, who finds herself in an emotional whirlwind when her beloved husband dies unexpectedly. The film is set in Dublin in 1967, when jobs aren’t plentiful for women and Agnes is forced to borrow money from a ruthless loan shark. She is willing to sacrifice almost anything for her children and makes a hard living working at a local market. Her ultimate dream is to attend a Tom Jones concert, so when a local baker learns that the singer is in town, he does everything in his power to make her wish come true.

Later at 9 p.m. ET comes Disco Pigs from Irish filmmaker Kirsten Sheridan, whose father is notable filmmaker Jim Sheridan (My Left Foot). Darren and Sinead, "Pig" and "Runt", were born at almost the same moment and grew up as best friends who play nasty tricks on people. Their relationship is frowned upon by their parents and Sinead is sent away to a private school. When Darren runs away to join her, he finds her with a new best friend. Stars Cillian Murphy, Elaine Cassidy and Geraldine O'Rawe.
