Open The Case Against Saddam, December 1 on Discovery Civilization Channel

Discovery Civilization

Saddam Hussein is accused of crimes against humanity and is now in the fight for his life. With his trial slated to recommence on Nov. 28, Discovery Civilization Channel presents the Canadian premiere of The Case Against Saddam, Thurs., Dec. 1 at 9 p.m. ET/10 p.m. PT. This one-hour special profiles the infamous dictator and the evidence the Iraqi Special Tribunal will present during their prosecution.

Although much has been written about the atrocities committed during Hussein’s reign as president of Iraq, prosecutors must piece together the forensic evidence and eyewitness accounts of these war crimes to convict the deposed leader. Among the allegations being investigated is the 1982 torture and killing of 143 Shiite Muslims and the arrest of over 500 men, women and children in the Iraqi village of Dujail. Other crimes still under investigation include the Anfal campaign to displace Kurds from Iraq in the mid-1980s, the 1988 chemical attacks on numerous Kurdish villages, the execution of several Shiite religious leaders, and the killings of political activists who opposed Hussein’s dictatorship throughout his Iraqi domination. If convicted, Hussein could be sentenced to death. While the evidence collected by the investigators is staggering, will the Tribunal’s case be tight enough to ensure the former dictator’s execution?

With unprecedented access to the Iraqi Special Tribunal investigation, The Case Against Saddam follows investigators and the legal team as they prepare to prosecute Hussein. As the world waits for his trial to get underway, this special sheds light on the measures taken by investigators to uncover the secrets behind Hussein’s brutal regime.

Journey back through time with Discovery Civilization to revel in humanity’s defining moments. Meet the people, cultures and ideas that have shaped our common past, and those that will dictate our future. Discovery Civilization is about learning where we came from and knowing where we can go.
