APTN to make important changes to its schedule to reflect new conditions of its broadcast licence
Posted on Monday, November 14, 2005 - 02:20 PM
APTN

Over the next few months, APTN (Aboriginal Peoples Television Network) will be making changes to its schedules with a focus on the northern schedule. These changes follow APTN’s commitment to be more responsive to its audience needs across Canada as well as respond to the new conditions of licence that were imposed on the network in the last licence renewal process

“We are starting to make the necessary changes to our programming schedule to live up to our commitments to our viewers. Our audience has requested more dramatic and entertaining programming in primetime and we are listening. Furthermore, we must act in accordance to the conditions we agreed to in our licence with the CRTC,” says APTN CEO Jean LaRose

APTN is amending both the northern and southern schedules to include more priority programming during primetime as required by the conditions of its licence with the CRTC (Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission).

Priority programming, as defined by the CRTC, includes the following categories:
- Long-form Documentary
- Comedy and Drama
- Variety, Music and Dance

As it relates to the northern feed, a 2004 Environics North of 60 survey showed that 68% of Aboriginal respondents and 53% of non-Aboriginal respondents stated they wanted more movies during primetime (7-11pm ET). As a result, APTN offers its viewers movies 5 nights a week and is making additional changes to include more drama in primetime. As well, APTN will offer more programming produced in Aboriginal languages on the northern feed to meet the requests from our viewers in the north.

Changes to the APTN northern schedule will take place over the next few months. Please check local listings for schedule changes.
