Canadian stage and screen actor Albert Shultz and Hollywood actress Lara Flynn Boyle have been tapped to play Conrad Black and Barbara Amiel Black in the upcoming CTV Original Movie Shades of Black.
CTV and Screen Door revealed today the dynamic casting choices for the timely CTV production, based on the book by Richard Siklos. Joining Shultz and Flynn Boyle on the bill is Jason Priestley, who has been cast as fictional investigator Jeff Riley. Principal photography begins October 8 in the United Kingdom and continues in Toronto on October 19 through November 12.
Shades of Black is the sixth original movie in CTV's "Heroes, Champions and Villains" production strand that focuses on remarkable Canadian personalities, characters and stories. Previous titles that have enjoyed critical and ratings success include the two-part mini-series Lives of the Saints and, most recently, TERRY, the story of Terry Fox's remarkable Marathon of Hope.
Known for tussling with prime ministers, amassing a newspaper conglomerate and making a splash on society pages on both sides of the Atlantic, Lord Conrad Black of Crossharbour is Canada's own "Citizen Kane." Along with his brilliant and beautiful wife Barbara Amiel, Black has held court for everyone from Margaret Thatcher and Princess Diana to Elton John and Henry Kissinger. The ongoing story of his rise and fall as one of the world's pre-eminent media titans is a fascinating reversal of the classic rags-to-riches story.
"Canadians have long been captivated by both the charm and complexity of Conrad Black," said Susanne Boyce, CTV's President of Programming and Chair of the CTV Media Group. "Albert Shultz and Lara Flynn Boyle bring to the screen the many shades of one of Canada's most fascinating couples."
"We want to go beyond people's preconceptions and explore this complex man who is as charismatic as he is controversial," said Shades director Alex Chapple.
As Conrad Black, popular Canadian actor Albert Shultz portrays one of Canada's most fascinating personalities. Shultz joined the Stratford Festival's Young Company in the late 1980s and went on to become one of Canada's most acclaimed actors. His varied film and television career includes roles in hit Canadian series Street Legal and Side Effects. Shultz is a co-founder of Toronto's Soulpepper Theatre Company, where he is currently starring in the title role in Hamlet.
Lara Flynn Boyle rose to fame as Donna Hayward in the popular series Twin Peaks. Her numerous television and film credits include the legal drama The Practice and the box office hit Men In Black II. Most recently, Boyle has joined the cast of the high-rolling drama Las Vegas.
Canadian-born Jason Priestly first broke hearts as Brandon Walsh in the pop-cult hit Beverly Hills 90210. Priestly has achieved success both in front and behind the camera with roles in dramas such as CTV's Sleep Murder and an impressive line-up of director credits including Barenaked in America, a documentary about Canadian rock band Barenaked Ladies. He will begin work soon on the CBS mid-season series Love Monkey.
Shades of Black's supporting cast includes Jason Schombing as David Radler (Cool Money) and Amy Price Francis (Our Fathers) as Shirley Black, Conrad's first wife.
