Posted on Thursday, September 01, 2005 - 10:00 PM
Comedy Gold

New acquisitions include Dallas, PerryMason, Smith & Smith, Comedy Hill as well as Hawaii Five-O. All shows start today!

Dallas
7 Days a Week at 12p & 11p et

This popular prime-time drama premiered in 1978 and chronicled the lives of wealthy Texas oil millionaires the Ewings and their business rivals, the Barnes family. The plots revolved around both families and their rivalry, as well as the dysfunctional relationships among them. The classic 1980 storyline ‘Who shot J.R.?’ is a mystery that kept viewers on the edge of their seats and was a moment in television history.

Perry Mason
7 Days a Week at 10a & 12a et

Based on Erle Stanley Gardner’s novels about a brilliant defense lawyer and his team who won many cases on the strength of Mason’s tough cross-examinations or the presentation of last-minute evidence. The show ran from 1957 to 1965 and featured performances from William Hopper as private investigator Paul Drake, as well as William Tallman, who played Hamilton Burger, the unlucky Los Angeles District Attorney who never seemed to catch a break.

Smith & Smith

7 Days a Week at 8a, 7:30p & 3:30a et

A half-hour sketch comedy show that proves what can be accomplished with low budgets and lots of talent. Steve Smith (who debuted his Red Green character on the show) performs sketches and musical numbers with his wife Morag. The show originally aired in the late 1970’s and lasted almost 200 episodes.

Comedy Hill
Weekends at 8:30a, 8p & 2a et

This Gemini Award-winning program lasted 60 episodes and continued on the success of the sketch comedy “Smith and Smith”. More talent was added to the cast, and Steve Smith’s “Red Green” became a recurring character.

Hawaii-Five-O
7 Days a Week at 11a & 9p et

Hawaii Five-O was created by Leonard Freeman as a series that not only featured law and order issues but also presented the beauty of the Hawaiian islands.

The original cast featured Jack Lord as Steve McGarrett, head of Hawaii Five-O, with James McArthur playing Danny Williams (replacing Tim O'Kelley from the pilot), Zulu as Kono Kalakaua and Kam Fong as Chin Ho Kelly.

At the end of the 1971-72 season, Zulu left the series after a disagreement and was replaced by Al Harrington as Ben Kokua, smaller in size but no less of a character.

After Leonard Freeman died, Al Harrington's appearances became infrequent in the 1974-75 season, and then he was dropped altogether with no reason given. Douglas Mossman filled in the 'Ben' role in later episodes as Frank Kemana.

By the 1976-77 season, supporting character Duke Lukela, played by Herman Wedemeyer, was so popular that he was given star billing on the show, following Kam Fong.

It was a shock for fans when, at the end of the 1977-78 season, in the episode "A Death In The Family", Chin Ho was murdered and dumped on the steps of the Iolani Palace, Five-O's base.

When CBS delayed making a decision on the show's future at the end of the 1978-79 season due to falling ratings and tired stories, James MacArthur took the opportunity to leave the series after 11 years.

The 1979-80 season saw major changes in the show. William Smith as James 'Kimo' Carew was bought in to replace James MacArthur, and the producers also added a new female Five-O member, Sharon Farrell as Lori Wilson. Completing the new line-up were existing Five-O member Duke, and Moe Keale as Truck Kealoha.

However, the style of this new season was very different, and CBS finished Hawaii Five-O's prime-time run on April 5 1980, with McGarrett vanquishing his nemesis Wo Fat.
